low iron means........

posted 13th Jul
does low iron have any effects on when you deliver? Whether it be c-sec or natural. Or is jsut a condidtion that deal with your pregnancy.? My husband is all pissed cause ONE i am not good with taking pills. and TWO i am supposed to be taking 2 iron tablets a day plus prenatal! Which i remember to take like once a week. I know bad mom I know! I am just not good with those things! And well now i am almsot due and he thinks that low iron means that i could have serious effects during my sirgery! Like they won:t be able to stop my bleeding? Is that true? If so am i screwed? Or should i just try and take them everyday til the 23rd ( day of my c-sec?)

It means that IF they have to give you a c-section or IF you have a long complicated labor and lose blood that you will have a harder time and may be more likely to need a transfusion. I have been bad about taking my iron pills too...I have a hard time because my midwife said not to take them within two hours from drinking milk and so I don't take it at breakfast with my cereal like I do with my prenatal.. And then if I forget about the dairy thing later in the day, It puts it off too. I think i am taking mine with dinner tonight.

She said something about it not being absorbed in to your system when you take it with milk..that instead you should take it with something with vitamin C(oj or citrus juice) or at least just water.

i was just told to take the iron supplements right after i eat twice a day as well because after you eat they will absorb better but they never mentioned anything about staying away from milk. also to take at an opposite time of my flinstones which i take right before bed.

Iron pills should be taken apart from your prenatals....the calcium effects iron absorption (so, taking with milk would have the same effect). To help your body absorb the iron, you should drink it with orange juice...or yes, something with vitamin C. You also want to make sure you're getting enough calcium. That's why you want to take them separately.

Also, anemia can affect your baby if it is prolonged. It may be responsible for poor growth, low-birth weight, and pre-term delivery. You probably are fine for all of those or your doctor would have noticed poor growth already...and obviously you haven't delivered early. I would try your best to take them until your c-sec. It may or may not make a big difference....but surely it can't hurt! Worst case...you'll need a transfusion.

Mine's low too....a little above 7, extremely low. I got scared today. The doctor told me that I might need a transfusion too. I'm getting induced on Monday and I'm hoping not to have a c-section but since I'm not dilating, the doctor said it might have to happen. He told me to start taking them twice a day with OJ to try and get it up. Do you guys think 3 or 4 days is enough to make it happen?

I got the store brand ones at Rite Aid for like $6.00. They are labeled iron 65 mg from ferrous sulfate 325 mg. It is the same dosage my midwife recommended, and was the same thing as the prescription she wrote me, but way cheaper.

Yes, iron is better absorbed with good sources of vitamin c, but if you sometimes forget to take it, it's better to just take it at fixed times. Half of something is better than nothing.

Mine is low too. I started out just taking 1 dose of iron but then I went back to the dr. and it was still low so I had to start taking the recommended 2 doses a day.
