Who did or plans to breastfeed?
posted 13th Jul
I went to a breastfeeding class, and the nurse said that 75% of new moms are starting out breastfeeding these days, but has no idea what the statistics are after 2 weeks.
She said that the most difficult time is the first few weeks, and many new moms stop breastfeeding during that time.
I'm curious to know what you mommies have done. Did you try it? Did it suck, or did you stick it out?
I am planning on breastfeeding but I have inverted nipples, so we'll see how it goes.

I breastfed my daughter and plan on pumping/breastfeeding this baby. It hurts a lot at first and it can be hard while your milk supply establishes, but it's totally worth it to stick it out. Since you have inverted nipples you should look into trying a nipple shield if the baby has trouble latching on.

I kept head strong about it. Most moms quit the first week because of latching problems or the fact that it isnt very comfortable the first week, it takes a minute for your nipples to get use to it and toughen up. I latched my daughter on 20mins after she was born and she has been a pro since then. Its best to nurse them within the first hour they are born. As for the tender nipples...I just bit my lip and took the pain and kept in mine, Ive done went through the most painful part, if I could push this 7 1/2 lb baby out, I can take a little pain of a sore nipple. Get nursing pads and nipple cream, it helps a lot.

Ha! I missed that!
I breast fed and plan on doing it again. There are so many benefits for baby aaaaaaand it's MUCH cheaper! (doesn't cost a thang) ;0)

I'm going to breast feed if I can.
Oh i learned the reason why most people stop ids because they get frustrated with it nowt working right away. If you do try it do it for more than just a week or two my mom advises trying it for at least six.

I b/f my guy until my supply went way down when I got preggers with #2 ( he was about 10m)
I had a rough start, but after that loved it ! the convinence and cheapness are not to be under estimated... and on the more factual serious side... the health benifits are much better for baby and for you!
Hope you give it a shot at least... PM anytime you've got b/f questions

My daughter was premature, so not being able to nurse her and trying to get my milk to come in with a pump sucked, but it was all worth it.. Thankfully she was able to latch and everything. We've been breastfeeding for 16 mo. and I plan on breastfeeding #2..
By 6 months it's only approx. 30% of women still breastfeed, and by one year it's only approx. 17% over one year is approx. 5%.. these stats are a few years old though

Supposedly if they crack and bleed you're supposed to express a little milk and rub it around on them. Don't wash your nipples (with soaps) because it will just make it worse. The milk is supposed to be the best thing to fix it. Or maybe get a cream like lanisol.. I plan on breastfeeding and pumping so daddy can feed with a bottle once the baby is born.

Yes, your nipple do get dry and crack...mine started to bleed too. I supplemented one night so I could give them a break and woke up with the biggest boobies ever. lol. Just keep the lanolin cream or whatever its called I cant think of the name right now..(sorry a little sleep deprived..lol.)...anyways keep putting it on after ever feeding..and before and after showering.

Good for you for making this choice! it is the best thing you can do for your child.
Yes the first few weeks can be very hard. But life is hard right. LOL you just have to be focused and set your mind too it. Surround yourself with breastfeeding books, friends and support. DO not take any formula home from the hospital, do not buy any in advance. Way to easy to just give up if that stuff is in the house. I will tell you straight out, it may hurt, you will be tired, you will wonder if this baby will ever let you put her down. But that all will pass. They say the first 6 weeks are the hardest. And from there it is usually smooth sailing. I have breastfed all three of my children. I have over come having flat nipples, and breastfeeding after a breast reduction. If I can do it, anyone can do it. I am now a peer counselor for our local breastfeeding support group in town. Contact your local chapter of LLL, make sure you find out about your lactation consultant at the hospital. Join as many online breastfeeding groups on line as you can find!
You can do this!
and if you want you can pm anytime and I will answer anyother questions you might have!

I've been breastfeeding for 6 months now. It was hard at first, the late night feedings were the worst, especially when I was up and my husband was passed out. It has been the best thing I have done for my son and I plan on bfing the next baby!

My son was a pro at BF'ing from the start. The only frustration I have had with it is the amount of time and dedication it takes. For awhile you lose a lot of your independence. You'll be amazed at just how often ( and how long) they want to nurse. However, I stuck it out, and now almost 8 weeks later things are MUCH easier! You just have to be patient and determined! Good luck!
and P.S.... Bf'ing should not hurt if you have a correct latch. You may become irritated there after 4 hour nursing sessions (yes, 4 hours sometimes ) but, it shouldn't hurt!
