potty train advice on 3 yr old girl

posted 13th Jul
My 3 year old daughter still won't pee in the potty and she holds her poop. She was potty trained by her 2nd birthday, but a few weeks after I had an amnio fluid test done on my 2nd pregnancy and I began bleeding so I needed bed rest and could not get up to take her potty and so she began going back in her pull ups. After that I could get her to poop in the potty until my son was born and she just started pooping and peeing in her pull up. Then I got her pooping only in the potty again but she would hold it and not poop in any other potty but the one at home. lately she has been holding and hideing behind curtains and pooping in her pants. I don't know why she was doing so well and then stopped. I put her in panties but she doesn't seem to care when she pee's herself. Everyone says it is because of our 1 year old son that she has stopped trying. Is there any advice.. I don't push it on her cuz I know one day she will go in the potty it's only a matter of time.. but I am so sick of buying her pull ups plus baby diapers and now with another one on the way i need her trained so I won't be buying 3 sets of diapers! Any advice would be helpful

I just potty trained my second girl(3 days for day and night) and I am a firm beleiver that pull ups are a waste of money. However my 4 year old was a poop holder and now suffers chronic constipation, so I'd talk to a pedi about alternatives.Just throw away pull ups and reward her for pooping in potty only-good luck!

i know this is really wierd but have you tried letting her watch any of those potty time dvds. My daughter has a bear in the big blue house dvd, I think its called potty time with bear, and it really helped her a lot. It made going to the potty sort of like a game for her.

her pedi gave me this clear liquid for her to drink that will help soften her poop so it will slide out but she refuses to drink it.

My 4 year old is on medicine and I just put it in her juice, she wouldn't even know it was there.Maybe she's just a little independent one and wants to do it all by herself, could you manipulate her into thinking it is her idea to use the potty and no-ones else?My two girls are completely different and I have to be creative in the way I deal with one opposed to the other and still making sure that I'm boss and everyone is equal-it is tiring but effective.Good luck-I'm sure she'll train soon, just lose the pull ups and I bet she'll train faster.

I think it's because she's confused as to where she's actually supposed to go! My neice is two years old and I'm having a hard time potty training too. We got her own potty and she'd go sometimes and other in her panties too, even poop. But then we got a Treasure Box and I make sure to take her constantly not letting her go too long to have an accident. And everytime she goes in the potty she gets a treasure from her box. We have pull ups but only for night time. The trick is consistency!! And she badly wants to go to school and I told her not until she pottys like a big girl. So hopefully that'll help you.

I got my daughter potty trained by everytime i went potty i took her with me and sat her on her potty and if she peed i gave her 1 marshmellow and if she pooped she got 2 it also helped that even if she did have accidents in her panties they could be washed instead of thrown away like a pull up and if she does poop her pants i would put it in the toilet and let her know that that is where it belonged and I actually started making her sit on the potty for a few minutes then letting her flush it and tell it bye bye!

I did this for 3 weeks. When she was naked she went pee and poop just fine, but with underwear on she'd poop in them every time. She sounded excited talking about the treat she'd get, but never wanted to actually go in the toilet. I had started pull-ups (way too early IMO, but I gave in to everyone around me) and so we've gone back to them now. She doesn't care one bit. She enjoyes the ease of just going without thinking. It's so frustrating! In part because she's tall. When she was 2 people thought she was 4, now that she's actually 3 (June) I'm so ready for her to poop and pee in a stinkin' toilet! She doesn't even tell us when she's gone. We have to ask her and she'll still deny it. ARG!!!

I agree with SOON2BMOMMIO2. Take her to the potty with you everytime you go and reward her when she does with a beaming smile, a hug, and her favorite stickers or even a marshmallow or jelly bean. Make her believe that you are so incredibly ecstatic!!! And I'm sure you will be! Also: Throw away the pull-ups! Most parents will also echo that most kids don't see these as any different than a diaper, and will use them to go potty in. Another great thing, especially since she's 3, would be to take her to the store and have her pick out her very own Big Kid panties. Remind her that she is a "big kid now" just like her mommy and that she is so special to finally be able to go in the big kid potty just like you. Also, set a timer for every 30 minutes to take her to the potty, even if she has to just sit there for a minute. Also, don't scold her too hard for accidents. I've found that the most over-the-top and exaggerated joy is the best medicine for a child that is potty training. If she has an accident, show her you are sad and say "It makes me SOOO happy when you go pee pee and poo poo in the potty. It makes me sad when you have an accident." This will go along nicely for when you put on your happy dance every time she successfully goes in the potty. Remind her constantly that she is a "big girl" just like mommy.

It takes consistence, but it will work!!!!

I've done this 3 times since my daughter turned 2 because of pneumonia and other serious illnesses where my daughter has lost control over her bowels, etc. It's worked every time.

yea it also helped my daughter go to the potty when she wears her panties by telling her that dora, elmo and spongebob get mad when you pee pee or poo poo in them they don't like it so she will grab her self and go running for the potty, saying which ever character she is wearing , don't get mad don't get mad!! I think it is soooo cute!

What happens if you can't be patient, calm, and positive? My daughter just stood in my living room and peed through her already poopy underwear onto the floor. I have an 8 month old who crawls everywhere and I had dripping poop on the floor. She doesn't care. She can't be bothered to stop playing and go sit on the freakin' toilet! The only reason she ever tells us she's pooped is if her legs get wet. She's usually decent about peeing in the potty because of that but she only poops in the potty when she's naked, which we did for a while at somebody's urging. But I also have a 5 year old son who was starting to be inappropriate and we decided it was time to have clothes on. So, what do I do? She honestly doesn't care. If I wasn't with her and having to clean up after her constantly...but I am and do...it's disgusting, frustrating and I don't like it one bit!

Ok, I've taken a deep breath...seriously, what do I do?

well I would pop her the leg or something and make her sit on the potty for 15 minutes and if she cries let her cry that is how we got my 3 yr old niece potty trained!~

thank you. I want to be positive and encouraging, but she just doesn't care either way and I'm with her all day everyday picking up her disgusting messes. I decided that any time she poops because she can't be bothered to stop playing and go to the bathroom, she'll lose that toy for a week. We'll see if that makes any difference.
