Exactly.

It's not always genetic either. I think why they blaim it on "genetics" is because the child sees the parents or whomever drinking all the time and the kid learns that drinking like that is normal. My husband was a little kid when he first started drinking. His uncle got him wasted on his 13 birthday and bought him a keg. My dad's side of the family are all hardcore alcoholics but I didn't grow up with any of them. My dad's dad died of a pickled liver a few years ago and sadly, my dad and brothers are on their way there. I myself can honestly say I really don't like alcohol. Again... It's not always genetics.

Right! Kind of like smoking. Nobody forced you to put that cig to your mouth.

Quoting --Aly--:“ It's just something I heard. Well, my friend tried to tell me she was an alcoholic because her parents passed on the gene. I told her it was bullshit, she didn't have to start drinking.”

It doesn't mean she's automatically going to be an alcoholic but she is more genetically prone to alcoholism/addiction because of her family history should she choose to drink.

It didn't but one day you try something and keep needing it more and more, to help you through shit days or just for fun.

Quoting Lianna:“ Hopefully she isn't. But the gene is there it could possbible happen if she tries something and needs ... [snip!] ... something and needs it more and more, not necesarily drugs or alcohol there is also gambling and collecting stuff as well.”

So.
Since the gene is there, you think its possible?

So what I want to know, is if she is raised with a clean family, then she might not have the urge.

But do you think because of the gene its programmed into her to do it?

The genetic side of the disease isnt saying that yes your child is going to be a drug addict or an alcoholic, it is saying that in the future if they deicide to try one or the other they are going to have a higher risk of becoming dependent.

It doesnt help you through anything. It just puts a little delay in dealing with whatever you have to deal with and in the long run only makes it worse.

That's what I told her, but she insisted that ONLY because it is a gene passed down to her, she HAS to be an alcoholic.

It hasn't programmed her to do it, but because she was raised with it around her I think is more the point, Hopefully because she is so young still she won't remember half the stuff when she reaches her teens.

You know whats odd? I am thankful my father was an alcoholic!!!
I know that sounds strange. His poor decisions helped me become who I am today. I got to see first hand what it did to our family and because of that I really dont care to "get drunk". Hell, I never even drank until after i was 21.

......
Thats what ive been saying.

The whole start of this D&D was to ask if people thought Gene's programs people to do it, or if they think it is enviromental.

No she's not programmed to do it. The initial choice to drink is her's but the resulting addiction is at least partially genetic. However is she knows she has a family history and claims she is an alcoholic because of that... well honestly it sounds like an excuse or justification on her part. I have a family history of alcoholism and while I do drink I am very careful not to drink often and limit how much I drink because it could very easily become a habit for me.
