Just Curious , question about sunscreen

posted 11th Jul
I just wanted to know how many parents put sunscreen on their kids even though they tan.I`m asking because I am apalled at some of my friends who do not put sunscreen on their kids-it is a ritual for us!My one friend(very educated) never puts sunscreen on her toddler cause he has darker skin, and she even treats radiation patients!I babysat another friends kids(granted she smokes around them-so not so surprised), and she said she doesn`t put sunscreen on them either.I am not trying to start a debate, I am asking because we are really fair and I would burn easily without so it is habit, but I really thought even though you tan you are exposed to harmful uv, and it is one thing to expose yourself but what about the kids.

I ALWAYS put sun screen on Teddy. If it's a sunny day, it gets put on when he's getting dressed, & topped up throughout the day.

He has a factor 50, which has a 5 star UVA protection.

I am fair-skinned too, but I do tan if I am using tanning beds. My older two kids have some Native American in them and don't really burn, but I always put sunscreen on them! It's nice knowing that they won't burn if we get carried away and forget to re-apply when needed, but it's always on before we initially go outside

I gree about putting sunblock on kids, but don't babies have to be a certain age before you can put it on them? I could have sworn I heard that somewhere. I'm also getting Grant a big floppy sunhat hehe so he's good to go.

They reccomend not under 6 months, but I am pretty sure it's just bc babies skin is so sensitive. My son was a preemie and born May 31st. We hung out in the pool all summer, and i put sunscreen on him with no side-effects. Same with my daughter from 3-5 months when we lived in cali

I just kept natalie out of the sun when she was under 6 mos. Something about the zinc that you are not supposed to put it on them. My husband and I are both light skinned, but we tan, however I still put it on her if I know we will be out for a while.

Thanks for the replies, I though maybe I was just really anal retentive.I cannot beleive how many of my friends do not put sunscreen on their kids.Maybe it`s because we really only have a few months of sunny hot weather and they think it won`t hurt them to be exposed for that little of time-I don`t know. Also there are a couple brands of sunscreens for babies-I think it`s just the sensitivity of their skin so doing a patch test would really help.

My daughter is very tan and I ALWAYS put sunscreen on her. I also have an infant and of course I put it on her too. The only one I'm not great about putting it on is ME! But, I do if we are outside for any long period of time!

I do... Tan or not UV rays can still cause skin cancer and it runs in our family. My son NEVER burns due to the mexican in him, he just gets this gorgeous shade of brown... Little stinker...   But still, I always make them wear it esp if we are outside for more than an hour.
