re: Down Syndrome

posted 16th Jul
Well I'm glad I didn't offend you. It would be the last thing I ever meant to do. But I never took any of the tests so I'm not sure if my baby will have it or not. I hope not of course. But for me, knowing there is another family in my church with a baby with downs I feel a bit better knowing I can go to them. Hopefully my little girl will be fine too. Heehee, I just try not to think about it. I had a miscarriage in October and my mom told me right after I found out "well at least your baby isn't retarted with downs or something else" I was so mad. I was like I don't care. I just want my baby. But I got preggo a month later and now this pregnancy so far has been practically perfect. I hope everything continues to go smoothly for you

I understand you don't want your child have to something different about it, but just because a person has DS does NOT mean that they are sick. It just means that they have an extra chromosome that may or may not effect their life in a serious way. Just because my son won't walk until he is 2 years old doesn't mean he is sick, it just means he has low muscle tone and will have to work a little harder to achieve what I we were able to achieve as children much earlier. My son is a blessing and I couldn't imagine him any other way. These women were just trying to tell you that if your little one does have DS it's not as bad as doctors make it seem.

i agree with you Sammie. DS is not a sickness. For all I know, most people with Down syndrome are very healthy.

I didnt mean any harm by what I said, I just meant I got the news, came haer was hurt and just needed some smpathy, but people who are not going through what you are cant know what your truly feeling so that cant really say much. Everyone here can take it for what its worth, but when you get that call its not exactly the happiest moment of your life, its very scary.

I know you didn't mean any harm. Sammie was just explaining to you and to other who may not know that DS is not a sickness.

A lot of people are ignorant when it comes to DS, and I was one of them until I met Sammie/Lincoln. She and Lincoln open my eyes into the world of DS. Well, I still don't know much about DS, but watching Lincoln achieves his milestones helps me more understand about DS.

I truely understand that you are hurt and scared. I never been in that situation, so I do not know how you truely feel. I was just agreeing with Sammie.

Good Luck with everything sweetheart. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hugs, sweetie, the triple scan is not incredibly accurate ttytt, I've heard of many false positives for all kinds of things via that test. They will do an US soon enough and see if there are any markers that show DS. I big concern with DS is that a child born with it may have heart defects, and, in the future is very prone to leukemia (not sure why, but they are). Regardless of DS or not, its still your baby that you will love very much and finding out now, for me atleast, would be preferable so that I could prepare for his/her arrival since a child with DS has different needs than a child w/out. (I bf, so I would want to read all about BFing a baby with downs for instance so that we could know how to make it work etc)

When my mother was pregnant with me (I am 26 y/o now) her doctor told her that I would be born having Down Syndrome. He presented/pushed the option of her terminating the pregnancy but my mom couldn't go through with it. Fortunate for me! Knowing of what my mom went through and the possibilty of me not being here today I know that I will never be able to make the choice to abort if I have disheartening news about my pregnancy.
I have read a little bit about the testing only to find out that they are less accurate than accurate. My advice to you I guess is to leave it in the good Lord's hands. What is going to happen happens. And working in the medical field I have witnessed miracles and have seen things that just happen for reasons unknown.

I am 31 and currentlyexpecting my first baby. She asked me if I wanted the test, and I told her Ididn't because no matter what the test came back we wouldn't even think about abortion. She told us that based on my age, health and history that she wouldn't recommend it anyway because of thehuge number offalse positives that come back. Andit's stressful enough being pregnant, you don't need the other stress of thinkingthe test came back positive. More than likely your baby ishealthy, don't stress too much! Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy!
