Milk Drying Up???? Advice Please!

posted 10th Jul
I think my nilk might be drying up, I'm not sure tho. Jayden seems to be getting enough when he feeds but I've been offering him a bottle afterwards today. Just incase. I think its drying up because today, when I pump I can barely pump an ounce or two from both breasts. My son is two weeks old and this is the first problem I've had with breastfeeding, he's been so good with it and I just want to be able to keep doing it. does anybody have any ideas why this could be happening and what I could do to stop it???

As you go your milk will increase and decrese depending on how much hes growing i wouldnt offer him a bottle id just let him eat until hes content if he wasnt getting enough hed cry and not even latch on but normally around 2 weeks to 4 weeks they start going through a growth spurt theyll eat more one week and eat less the next so one day youll be able to pum p a lot and the next not so much it happens to me all the time my sons 5 months old and once he starts growing he eats more like for 30 min instead of the normal 15 and then when i go to pump i cant get shit and it sucks but everything willbe okay and its perfectly normal

No need to offer a bottle.. it's highly unlikely that you are drying up. A pump cannot efficiently empty the breasts and is not a good indication of how much milk you are making. I was never able to pump more than 2 oz. since my daughter was born (16 mo. ago).. as long as your son has plenty of wet/poopy diapers and he is growing than you are making enough!! Try not to worry..

don't give him a bottle! He is probably going through a ten day growth spurt and you need to nurse as much as he wants to increase your milk supply. It's a supply and demand system and if you give him the "extra" he needs in the form of formula your body will never get the signal to make more.

Secondly the only way to judge if he is getting enough food is that he has 6-8 WET diapers per day. Him being satisfied or not after a feeding isn't always a good indication because of growth spurts. You can not judge how much milk you are making based on how firm your breasts get or how much you pump. I have been nursing (and pumping while at work)_ for over a year. My daughter has had no formula. My breasts never got hard and I had to work hard at getting enough milk pumped to feed her while at work. But when i was home on the weekends, I didn't feed her non-stop and she was growing just fine. A pump is not as efficient as your baby. It's hard, but you have to trust your body to do what is right. If your baby starts losing weight, or isn't having many diapers, then it may be time to see a lactation consultant about how to boost your supply.

Stick with it, get rid of the formula...you can do it!

It's normal... a lot of women think that they don't or can't make enough milk for their babies, but honestly that just isn't the case 98% of the time.
