Folic Acid?

posted 10th Jul
hey everyone, I just want to know.....

My husband and I are going to ttc in October, so I am trying to prepare my body now.  I know I am supposed to take 1mg of folic acid.  i also read that I should be taking prenatal vitamins.  The ones I have also have 1mg of folic acid.  Is it possible to take too much???

I don't know if you can take to much folic acid, but my dr told me to take my prenatal and 1 pill of Omega 3 each day. She recommended taking Expecta to get the Omega 3. You can get it at walmart it is about $10 for 30 day supply.

Hmm.. I think its best to talk to a doctor about it.. cuz you take extra folic acids if you're low on them..

I'm not sure if you can too much, but I would just take the prenatal vitamins and not take an extra supplement of folic acid, thats what I do. I usually take 1 prenatal a day and a calcium, and the only reason I take an extra calcium is because my baby is at risk for siezures. It runs in my family. But ya, just take a prenatal unless a doctor says otherwise

My friend takes 4 mg of folic acid during pregnancy. I'm sure there can be a toxic amount but its gotta be pretty high because folic acid is water soluable and you pee out whatever you don't take in.

I would just stick with the prenatals unless a doctor has told you to take the additional folic acid. They should have everything you need!

i am no doctor for sure however my old OB gave me a script for 4 mgs a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and one day i woke up with the worst abdominal pain in the world, i was convinced i was having a MC because i started to bleed... my uterine lining, was thick and it was hard kind of like a fruit roll up and i swear to bob i gave birth to my own period

i called out of both my jobs, called the doctor and she couldnt put her finger on..so i stopped that much folic acid right then and there and just started taking prenatal vitamins and my periods have been normal since then..that was in january..it was crazy   so now i go with my gut, if it doesnt sound right to begin with, then it probably isnt

Last time I had my blood tested my folic acid was really low. I don't know why though? The doctor said it could make me tired and not absorb other vitamins as well as B-12 and so they put me on prescription of folic acid and extra B-12, they can test you to see if your level is good if you are in doubt I would recommend you do that... you can make sure that all of your levels are Aok.

I just went to my GP today and he told me that unless you have a deficiancy or certain things in your medical history then you really only need to be taking a prenatal vitamin. Combine that with a healthy diet full of dark green (and colourful!) Veg along with lean meat and wholegrain carbs and your good to go!
