re: Folic Acid?

posted 11th Jul
Please. please, please make sure that you take enough folic acid before ttc. You can read my story on my profile so I don't have to retype it all. I can not tell you how important it is and wish I would have known with my last baby!!!!

You can get prenatals over the counter and take them before you're pregnant. I take the target kind and we're not even officially ttc yet.

I'm taking a prenatal right now along with Omega 3 Fish oil 3 times a day. You can get both at Walmart, or any pharmacy. I've been considering taking extra folic acid as well because I have consistently heard that you should when TTC.

To help with CM, drink lots of water, and Green Tea REALLY helps. Also, if you take 1 Mucinex or take Robitussin every night it helps with CM as well (Look at the back of the box and your looking for a high dosage of Guaifenesin)

I heard that green tea depleats the amount of folic acid in your body. Have you ever heard this? I have only read articles, I haven't talked to my dr. about it yet.

This is the article I was reading about drinking green tea. I don't know how true it is, but I am going to print it out and take it to my Drnext time. I will let you know what I find out.

yes please let me know, cause I keep reading stuff confirming what you're saying. If it's true I'm going to be ticked...I'm tired of telling doctors how to do their job.

that would be good to take I would think because Raspberry Leaf and chasteberry are good. BUT Anyone that is taking Clomid should not drink that, cause vitex/chasteberry can make the Clomid not work.

But now I'm curious by this?
"Green Tea is a powerful antioxidant that enhances reproductive health by repairing the oxidative damage that occurs naturally as the result of environmental toxins and aging. A study from the American Journal of Public Health found that drinking 1/2 cup or more of green tea daily doubled the odds of conception per cycle. Due to the inclusion of Green Tea, there is a very slight touch of caffeine (equal to just 1/25th a cup of coffee)."

This is so confusing. I wish people would make up there mind about green tea! I am going to call my dr this AM for my lab results. I will ask then instead of waiting for my next appt.

I didn't know that vitex interfered with clomid. Sorry. I guess just like anything, there are conflicting reports on the affects of Green Tea and clomid/ fertility.

I don't really think that this is conflicting information. I think green tea doubles the odds of conception because it increases your CM which helps get the sperm to the egg. Just because it doubles your chances of conception doesn't mean that it will be a healthy pregnancy though. It very well could lower the amount of folic acid you have in your system. From my understanding, folic acid doesn't help you to conceive. It's just VERY important for a healthy pregnancy. I haven't read anything about green tea reducing your folic acid, but I also haven't been looking. If what everyone is saying is right, it sounds like green tea is a double edged sword: better chance of getting pregnant, but higher risk of problems with the pregnancy due to lower folic acid at conception.

Ok, my dr said she had never heard anything about green tea one way or the other. She said the only reason she can confirm it would not be good to drink is because of the caffeine. But she is going to look into it a little more and let me know. As for me...I think I will not drink it just in case. I guess I'd rather be safe than sorry. Even though I really like it.
