"solid" food?

posted 10th Jul
I myself am 6 months pregnant.
My friend has a 2 month old son. She knows it's still too early to start jar feeding him. But at the same time, I think at one point she was a boy scout, because her motto is "be prepared." She would like to know the "recommended" time to start giving him jar food.

4-6 months or whenever her pedi gives the ok. I started my daughter with rice cereal about 2 weeks before she turned 4 months, but she was already getting it in her bottles for reflux...

Her pedi will let her know at the well baby checks when she is to start food. The recommendation is 6 months, but it really varies baby to baby as to their readiness. Lydia started cereal at 5 moths 1 week and still only gets 1 tbsp a day of it and she is 6 months now

My youngest didn't really get going good with solids until he was 9 months. He's a booby baby & was a chubby thing, so the ped said it was fine & that some BF babies hold off solids until a year. I just try to follow my kids' cues. Now, my oldest was wearing out the baby food by 3 months.

Normally 4-6 months. There's a whole bunch of different indicators (doubled birth weight and at least 13 lbs, supported sitting, insatiable appetite) but every baby is GOING to be different and they aren't all ready at the same time.

She'll know her baby best when he's ready. For me, I just started trying rice cereal with my daughter at around 4 months, and I knew she wasn't ready because she wasn't interested and didn't seem to understand the whole "open mouth swallow food" concept after a few tries by me. I would try again with her every week or 2, and it was VERY clear when she was ready, because one day she totally understood how to eat from the spoon and opened her mouth for more, and was very enthusiastic about it.

That is the best way to do it.  FOllowing the child's cues
