Okay Sooooo

posted 10th Jul
Yesterday I was let go from my job. My question is has this happened to anyone else so close to delivery, and how did the whole health insurance thing go. I've been reading up on COBRA, but that will take 14 days for me to even get the paperwork and although it will be retroactive, I have an appointment next wednesday. I was told by the HR that yesterday was my last effective day of coverage. But told by other people that my job has to cover me for 30-60 days. Soooo does anybody have experience with this, or works in HR that could help clear this up for me. I really really don't have the money to pay the doc out of pocket, I was in the process of catching up on my bills and only have 1300 to last until I go back to work and who knows when that will be.

Also, I know I could apply for medical assistance, but my doctor doesn't accept their plans, I'm 33 weeks and love my doctors. I really don't want to have to change physicians this late. Any help would be appreciated

Let you go for being pregnant? i think thats illegal. My job suggested I start my maternity leave at 35 weeks (which i did...i had a very physical job)....I got 3 weeks paid time off, then the rest was FMLA. I had to pay my insurance out of pocket though which sucked

The law requires that they cover you under cobra for 180 days, so 6 months. It will cost you more than it was costing you while you worked there though. When I quit a previous job I had to use the cobra plan and it was twice as much a month for the premium than what had been deducted from my paychecks.

The coverage is retroactive. You should get paperwork in the mail. Your doctors office will bill the insurance just like they always would. There will probably be a lot of fighting later to get them to cover the charge for the visit, but you ARE covered so they have to. It'll just be annoying.

I was let go because my FMLA ran out but I had a sick baby so I could not return to work. My insurance lasted until the month ended. Cobra is SO expensive. I think it was like almost a $1000 a month for me and my son to be on it.

Not for being pregnant, but for another bs reason. I'm looking into wrongful termination.

Okay so I shouldn't worry about it until I get to that bridge. Thanks a lot!!!

That really sucks! I'm sorry.. I only have myself on the plan because I couldn't afford to put my daughter on. The HR lady told me it would be about 350. So hopefully it's about that. which will eat into the little bit of money I have... I'm trying not to stress out, but I've got a car note and insurance that I was behind on. But the job was stressing me too soooo...

How is your son doing now?

It has a very long year with his illnesses but he is know doing wonderful. He will be one on the 20th. It will probably be a very emotional birthday for me. I cried just talking about the planning of his birthday. lol

All doctors have to accept Medical Assistance, I figured that out when I applied. You get a medical assistance card AND an insurance card, like I have Healthpartners to go with it because that's what my doctors accept. But yea they have to take you.
