re: unassisted childbirth

i hate Discovery Health birth shows-- it's just a bunch of dramatic emergency stories designed to evoke fear in people and make us think that doctors are gods and we are supposed to rely on their every word. i think if we trust our bodies more and realize the power we have in our own abilities as mothers, i doubt half of the issues that come up in hospital births would take place. medical advancement is great and all, but we are steadily losing the power that we naturally have to invision an uncomplicated, healthy childbirth and allow it to happen.

oh yes, you do.. but since I have yet to meet a mother who went unassisted and had a horrible ending to it, i think happily about it. I believe research is important when doing something like unassisted birth..

I have to agree. I used to love discovery health...and thenI got some knowledge...They are such drama queens! "Now poor Mrs. Smith will have to face the dragedy of delivering her very premature twins 2 WEEKS EARLY. They are sure to suffer from poor lung funtcion and be so tiny, they will fit in the palm of her tired, weary hand...." Please....

yeah, it's pretty sad that a lot of mothers rely on ridiculous shows like that for their birth knowledge. it also frustrates me that there doesn't seem to be any really good shows on childbirth. (and to think that i was excited about getting cable....) ah, well, books are better anyway.

thats so true, before i found BG i was soo clueless. even after having one baby already there was so many things i didnt know. i was under the deluded impression that once you got past 12 weeks everything was plain sailing etc how wrong was i !!there definatly needs to be more realistic info out there and easy to find.

Things can go wrong.
For instance, i had a placental abruption out of nowhere. Completely healthy pregnancy, and then BOOM. Placenta comes halfway detached. Orion's heartrate had to be closely monitored.

If you dont get prenatal care, how do you know your child isnt breeched? or that you dont have placental previa?

So many women and infants have died from it.

Yep.
All i did for the last month of my pregnancy was surf birth videos and read up on labor/delivery.

I think it for the best. Because when my water broke and i saw all the blood, i knew immediately what was occurring and that it was crucial to get medical help ASAP.
But, because of shows i watched on discovery health, i also assumed i had lost Orion. There was so much blood and i knew the mortality rate for severe placental abruptions are high. So i assumed he was gone.
