smoking question

posted 9th Jul
I dont really know if this is where I should post this but here goes...

Okay so I was having this discussion with someone the other day and they said that being stressed is worse for a baby than smoking to releave (sp?) the stress is....
She said that smoking in the third trimester doesnt do anything to the baby as long as you dont do it in the first trimester and most of the second.. however stress in the third trimester can cause all kinds of problems...This doesnt sound right to me but I didnt really find what I was looking for online so I just figured I would ask here and see if you ladies knew more on the subject

Actually after the fifth month from what I've read cause a lot the problems and can even cause fetal death to heavy smokers. Since I am a smoker I've been very careful to avoid second hand smoke and only smoke a couple a day if that. My doctor said cutting down is better than nothing. But it isn't good for either me or my baby so I am definately trying harder to quit, but my job is very stressful so if I am absolutely craving I will smoke one. I am proud to say I have only had one today, and I am not craving. I was doing really well with not smoking period, but something tramatizing happened last week and I lasped, but I am trying again.

No, inhaling poisons and tozins into your lungs and therefor into your blood stream is much worse than whatever stressnot smoking would bring.

This girl is just trying to make herself feel better about her poor choices.

The nicotene still goes into your blood stream. Smoking can put you into pre-term labor SURGEON GENERALS WARNING. Did you ever see the commercial about the smaller babies. They are singing and they said that the cigarette comapany says that woman want smaller babies so that smoking is ok. Someone must have fell and bumped theur head. Not everyone who smokes has complications or low birth weight but why take the risk.

I was told by my OB/GYN and Perinatal Dr., NOT TO STOP smoking. Just to cut back. I smoked 3 cigs a day IF THAT..sometimes I'd go a few weeks without a cigarette. My daughter is fine

See thats what I was thinking too... Also though I was wondering about smoking and breastfeeding, like how does that work? I have seen a lot of people that smoke and breastfeed and I always heard that you shouldnt but I wasnt about to ask them like "why are you smoking and breastfeeding"

i smoke and BF.
only minimal amounts actually reach your breastmilk.
Just like how you can get prescribed vicodin, because only small amounts are actually secreted into your milk supply.

I smoked before I got pregnant but it was super easy for me to quit since it was one of the few things that made me want to puke my head off. lol

I was over there and I was super stressing about something and she was trying to convince me that smoking would be better than whatever I was stressing about. Something about the conversation just sounded off to me so I was just wondering.
As far as the breastfeeding question, I wont lie about it I am the first to admit that I cant wait to be able to have a cigarette again lol so I was just curious about what the effects are to a baby who breastfeeds.

Oh I get it now, if you haven't been smoking its not a good idea to start again. Especially since you were stressing out, she should have been trying to tell you to relax. Yeah Im not gonna lie I can't wait to smoke a newport after I give birth. I wouldn't recomend the whole BF thing and smoking, but to each their own. If you want to start smoking again, I do and don't Im torn I wouldn't advise BF. But I have read that even if you don't smoke around new baby like go outside and stuff, there are still toxins on you and stuff. I think its in what to expect the fist year, but I'll check for you. Its really all about what you feel comfortable with at this point and what you think is good for baby. And the book has a whole compartive section between bottle feeding and BF so its really a personal preferance I think.
