MRSA and breastfeeding kinda long

posted 9th Jul
OMG. ok. A few weeks ago I was getting flu like symptoms and all this other stuff and I had a bump on my breast, went to the dr and I thought I had mastitis from breastfeeding and whatnot, well it had gotten so bad it turned into an abcess and I had to have them try to stick me and try to pull all the stuff out whatever. but it didnt work and just came back so they ended up draining it through a tube and they said i could still breastfeed etc. They put me on some antibiotics as well. The whole process took like 3 weeks of time before I was actually seen and treated and stuff.

WELL, like yesterday I went into the dr for my "6 week checkup" even though its been awhile longer than 6 weeks but anyway, the dr was asking all these questions and asked about surgery and I told him I had a ceserean and how a few weeks ago i had a breast abcess from breastfeeding and it was drained. Then he looked through my paperwork and was like (with this kind of shocking facial expression) Oh!! it says here you tested positive for MRSA?! and i was like.... wha...? I did? what's MRSA? and then he said what the letters stood for and I was like..... ok ..... so what is that? I had that? what does that mean? Is it gone? and he was like well do you feel ok? and im like... yeah. and he was like, ok well ur fine then its gone.

i had no clue what he was talking about though so when i got home i looked up MRSA on the internet and found all this stuff about fatal infection staph bacteria and how sometimes dr.s wont tell you that you have it because they dont wanna freak you out etc.

So now I am totally anxiety ridden and freaking out. Because I had a breast abcess and it was drained and they DID give me antibiotics and i went back for a follow up check up and whatnot. but the symptoms of a breastfeeding abcess and MRSA seem to be the same and they way they handle it is the same, so did I have MRSA, or just a breastfeeding abcess, or both??? and is this MRSA thing really gone??? I'm just freaked out now I guess, and I keep staring at myself in the mirror like am I ok?? am I secretly dying??? the dr who took care of it had assured me that the abcess was gone for good and it wouldn't come back so was he secretly saying the MRSA was gone? or did the second dr read my paperwork wrong when he informed me that I had that??

AAAARRRGGH, my mind is going insane.

I think its so wrong for doctors to withhold information like that!! It' your body and you have every right to know when you're diagnosed with something. Something about that sceneriojust doesn't sound right. I'm afraid I'm no help either I have no clue what MRSA is, but I wish you the best of luck.

What kind of antibiotics were you on? It's not that easy to get rid of MRSA. I would be flipping out at that doctor if I were you, you deserve to know what's going on with your body. Call them and try to get more info.

it may have just been a staph infection that was not mrsa. I have had one b4 and they are not dangerous as long as you get antibiotics b4 the infection spreads to your blood. You would know if you still had it, it only gets worse with time and if it had been mrsa the absess would not go away, it would get bigger and need surgery to remove. So most likely as long as you feel fine and your doc isnt worried you have no need to be worried

I dont know what kind of antibiotics it was, because i'd already finished them and threw the bottle away, but i think it was something with a "v" in it?

I did have to have surgery to get rid of it. they slice me open and put a tube in me and I had to walk around for a week with a tube hanging out of my boob.

well he didnt tell me i had it, but since apparently he knew about it, i would assume you can't pass it along because he told me to continue breastfeeding during the whole process, so that my milk supply wouldn't decrease too much. however, the milk duct that was infected will never make milk again because he said once it had healed up it would scar on the inside.

oh sry i must have missed that, but if they did the surgery then you should be fine. Its not something that can silently kill you, its pretty agressive and as it progresses you get much worse so as long as you are feeling better you should be fine.

ok well I just called the hospital to make sure they took care of it and apparently that's what the antibiotics they put me on were for so everything should be ok with me now. that's really relieving but still i never would have gotten so freaked out just now if someone had told me i ever had it in the first place.
