Breastfeeding, dieting, and exercise
posted 8th Jul
Okay, so I'm 2 weeks PP and my doctor told me before I left the hospital that as long as I feel up to it, it's okay to exercise, but not to overdo it. I'm not sore anymore and I'm bleeding very little now so I decided I'm well enough to start working out again. I went to the gym this morning and it felt great, but later today I noticed more blood. Before I get alarmed, I wanted to ask you girls if this is normal when you exercise PP.
Also, is it okay to diet while breastfeeding?

Most doctor's tell you to wait 6 weeks for that reason. You can diet as long as you are getting enough to maintain your milk supply and stay healthy.

Not sure about the bleeding, but for me the "flow" wasn't consistant..
Define "diet".. is it OK to eat a healthy well balanced diet while breastfeeding? Yes! It's encouraged.. Is it OK to go on a calorie restricted diet while breastfeeding? No!

That soon after giving birth, it is very easy to overdo it, and the pick up of your flow is your body's way of saying slow down. While it is okay to exercise, it needs to be light exercise, andno abdominal exercises. As for the dieting, it is fine as long as you are consuming enough calories to make up for what your body is using to produce milk. My doctor said that if you base a normal diet to maintain a weightat 2000 calories not breastfeeding, then a diet to maintain while breastfeeding should be at least 2500. Most likely, if you eat healthily and only eat when you are hungry, then you won't even need to watch your calories and you will lose weight while breastfeeding.
