Pumping colostrum before the baby is born??

posted 6th Jul '08
Hey girls. I started leaking colostrum today [I'm almost 34 weeks], and a friend of mine said that I could start pumping and freezing it now to take to the hospital with me and give it to Gage when he is born.

Have you ladies heard about doing that? I didn't even think to do that when I started leaking with Jordan, but it sounds like a great idea.
I was trying to look on some websites and see if that is okay to do..making sure the colostrum would be okay to freeze and then give to him, but I couldn't find anything.

Thoughts? Thanks girls!

Stimulation can cause early premature labour...which is bad. so dont do it! lol you'll have enough when the babe is born to just feed him from there.

My friend recently had twins and the doc recommended she pump and freeze as soon as she could. She started at 30 weeks.

Ummm.. I dont know if its ok or not... but I do know that pumping/nipple stimulation has been used to induce labor and at 34 weeks that prob. wouldnt be a good idea.. I'd def. ask OB b4 doing it.

I would talk to your doctor first as it can induce labour and may not be wise to do.

I've heard this can send you into early labor. I also heard that its really not colostrum until the baby is born. The colostrum is made when a chemical is released only after giving birth. So, I guess its not really colostrum and would be of no value to the baby. Hope this helps.

I was told not to pump before birth, because it can cause preterm labor.

Why not just let him get it when he's nursing at the hospital? I mean/that is to say, what is the advantage of having it pre-pumped?

I actually heard somewhere that it's nto a great idea to do that, because the colostrum is not like milk in that the more you pump the more you will produce..... It's not really meant to be pumped, the baby needs to actually breastfeed to get the colostrum because this is what brings your milk in and establishes your supply

And that is why I ask you ladies! lol I figured if it really was a great thing I would have heard of it before..lol.
To whoever asked why I would want to do it, I was thinking back to when I had Jordan and how little it seemed was coming out. So having some stored up would be good, I'd thought.

Anywho-Thanks for your responses ladies!

DON"T do it. You can damage your nipples because your body is not ready to breastfeed. Likeveryone else said, it can cause premature & very strong labor. It is colostrum, but not the same composition as real colostrum. As soon as the baby is born, your brain releases a new hormone that starts lactation. Only at that point is it colostrum that is healthy for your baby, full of antibodies. It is just fluid right now. you won't get enough to freeze & it won't be beneficial to your baby because of its lack of composition. It won't up your milk supply either because you're not in lactation mode. It confuses your body by sending the signal to your brain that a baby is needing to be nourished. Search the La Leche League's site at www.llli.org You can email them questions also.

Thanks for the website. I'll check it out!
