Rotavirus Vaccine

posted 6th Jul
So Lennon's 2 month "shot" appointment is tomorrow and although I have decided to go with a selective vaccine plan, I am not sure whether or not to get the rotavirus vaccine?! It is so new that not a lot of testing has been done. however after reading The Vaccine Book, i am aware that thousands of kids each year get very sick from rotavirus. I have already decided to get the DTAP tomorrow and get the PC and the HIB next month and not get the polio. SO I need you ladies to give me your opinion (nicely please) and tell me the reactions your babies had to the vaccine. Thanks!

My son has gotten it his last two visits and has had no reaction. My daughter caught Rotovirus and almost died. I wish the vaccine had been avaliable when she was younger.

...hubby and I GOT the rotavirus from Kennedy when she got it during her 2 month shots. It's a live vaccine, and EXTREMELY contagious. Don't kiss him on the mouth for the rest of the day, and scrub the hell out of your hands and arms after each diaper change, that's really all the advice I can offer.

wow really? my son has recieved the rotavirus vaccine and I kiss him all the time, nothing ever happened to me and they never warned me of that.. hmm

but OP, I actually read an article on WebMD about them coming out with new rotavirus vaccines as well, combo-vaccines, I dunno if they are already out but I'll go try to find it for ya

also, after my son got his last rotavirus vaccine, as well as a few others, he did end up vomiting... a lot. but that was also the first day he tried squash so I am not sure what caused it really haha and he was fine after that. I've read about what rotavirus can do to a baby so personally I would recommend getting it

My daughter's pedi said 10 days of being overly-sanitary with poopy diapers until its fully thru their system. Don't kiss them on the mouth for the first few hours. My understanding is that it's live until the vaccine has fully passed thru their system.

...I wish her first pedi told us that...

We declined the rotavirus. It wasn't even around for my older son, and he never got it, so we didn't feel it was a necessity.

i know, i probably will but i am one of those paranoid moms that read way too much about everything and I have read that sometimes babies get convulsions from the vaccine and they also have an increased risk of pneumonia. That is so scary!

See, rotavirus has been around for a lonng time and I have never even heard of it until now, so I am wondering if it is really nec. to get the vaccine. There are just so many these days! It is hard to choose the most important ones. Has your baby gotten really bad diharea?

I have already decided to not give him the MMR vaccine because of the side effects. But this rotavirus one is spinning me for a loop! of course his daddy wants him to have all of his vaccines and thinks I am this big hippy for wanting to eliminate some and delay the others. Oh boy. haha.
2 years? Please don't think I am being rude if I ask if you are breastfeeding?

Nope. We've never had any problems with diarrhea with either boy. I am a germ-a-phobe though, so maybe that is part of it. Nobody touches the baby unless their hands have been washed with soap AND sanitized with Purell. I just couldn't justify adding one more vaccine to the mix, especially one that was just developed in the last few years since my oldest was born (he will be 3 next month).

Thanks!! See the rotarix is the one that is havinga higher incidence of pneumonia. Also giving a 5 combo vaccine could give them SOOO much aluminum which is a lot for their kidneys to handle. Sometimes i wish I didn't read so damn much. haha
