Thermometers

So for my shower I got a pacifier digital thermometer, and I also got a three in one little stick thermometer that can take the temp three different ways: oral, anal, and some other way. Alright so my question is, I have heard that up until X-months old the only good way to get an accurate temp is to take the temp anal, but honestly I like the paci therm better. It is true that you can only get an accurate reading by anal measurement the first few months? Or is that for stick therms? B/c it seems like the paci would be alright b/c they suck on it and it stays in their mouths long enough to get a good read. Can anyone shed some light on this one for me? Or do I just need to ask my doc Wednesday?

to be honest i would ask your doc. My pedi would always ask us if we took his temp rectally and we'd say no. when they would take it rectally he usually didn't have a temp. it gets the most accurate since the temp of a bottle can change the temp in their mouth. Hope that helped

That's interesting. So how did they take it rectally? Just...pop it in and hold his cheeks together? I've honestly never seen it done that way before.

They put lube on it and insert it a little bit (less than an inch) and then yeah hold his cheeks together and wait. It is also a good trick if they are constipated.
We have a ear one too, but those suck! even with me it says my temp in 96.5.

I have the paci one and I get a more accurate reading on it then anywhere else and I even used the one you can put under the tongue, under the armpit or anywhere else and that doesn't even read right. Rogue doesn't fuss with the paci one, but she screams bloody murder if you use the one under her arm, like the doctors do.

Me either lmao. Alright so how long is this for? Until they're off the bottle and/or boob? Since the bottle can change the mouth temp? I know I'm so full of questions I'm sorry...this is new to me lol. Do you need to buy the therm covers if you're going to do it rectally?

For how long i'd ask your dr or pedi once he is born. Kaden is 5 1/2 months old and we still do it rectally, but as a last resort. like if the other ways are reading too low or too high then we will make sure it is actually that temp before we rush him to the dr.

Alright so I could use the paci therm in theory, and if the reading didn't seem right then go rectal as a last resort?

Yeah that is what we do. they just say the rectal ones get the best reading.

apparently armpit readings are usually 1 degree off. it seems for my baby, it is 1 lower. i know he'll poop when i do it rectally, do i come prepared with full hazardous gear! lol

  OMG lol. Wow I never thought of that lol. I guess it would make him think he had to poop. Have you ever tried the paci therms?

Yeah we have the covers and we also either us Vasaline or just petro jelly ( the stuff we got from his circumsion) but i guess it is your preference. We have probably 4 thermometers just for kaden.

Honestly no, her pedi just said to use the one under her arm. She said in her opinion it has the best accuracy as far as getting the temp right.
