Cervix question

When does dilation occur...like how ripe does your cervix have to be before you start to dilate?

it just has to start effacing as well

Actually as wierd as it is you don't have to have effaced for your cervic to dialate. I was in labour crowning and fully dialated with no effacing. That's why I had to have an epesiotomy.

I have another question...are ripening and effacement the same thing?

I'm not totally sure but i think that ripening is just when your cervix is softening to efface. I do know that effacement is when your cervix shortens.
