Burning the flag.

posted 5th Jul
I'm not sure if this has already been debated, but I was curious what other people think about burning the American flag? Should it be a right to burn the flag in protest? Is it really such a horrible thing? If so, why?
I'm also curious what other countries think about burning their own flags. Is it as big a deal to burn your own flag in say, Canada or England, like it is in America?

I don't think many people in Canada would really bat an eyelash. heh

And from what I understand, Americans do have the right to burn the flag, under the 1st Amendment. At least, that's what I read earlier today in another thread.

Right, but there is a certain way that it needs to be done.
I was asking about the people that burn the American flag in protest. Congress tried to pass an Amendment banning burning of the flag. It did not pass.
I was wondering if people think that burning the flag is disrespectful.

Disrespectful? Yes, I'd say so. The better question is, is the flag deserving of respect in the first place? Well, that's subjective. It's just an idol, in my opinion. It's a symbol. If I don't think the government which the flag represents is worthy of respect, why should I respect the symbol of said government?

It's MEANT to be disrespectful.

That's the whole point behind burning it.

Exactly. What makes the flag derseve respect? Because of what it represents? What exactly does it represent? Maybe it is different things to different people. I'm interested to learn what people think that the flag represents.

I believe that it was decided not to be illegal by the Supreme Court case Texas v. Johnson.
