re: Burning the flag.

posted 5th Jul
I've burned an American flag before.
People in my home country burn our flag from time to time, but it's not really that big of a deal.

Why did you burn the flag?

To answer the OP, I think burning the American flag (or any flag) is very disrespectful, to me the flag represents the blood, sweat, and tears of everyone who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms of this nation, and to burn a flag, to me is like spitting on their memory.

While doing a little more research on the flag Ifound this andquoted it.

"For those who have fought for it, freedom has a taste that the protected will never know.”
Close friends and family have died fighting for that Flag. Millions of brothers before me have done the same.
IF you can’t or don’t respect our Flag, then at least have the common decency to STFU."

I feel that burning the flag disrespects our country and the men and women who have died for it. The flag symbolizes our country and freedom. To me, burning it is like spitting in the faces of those who have died for it and those who are or have been defending it.

Because the American government made a decision to become involved in a situation they had no right to be involved in that involved my home country, so thousands took to the street in an anti-American protest.

It's not illegal, and I see nothing wrong with it.

The American flag represents the American government. When people burn it in protest it shows their disdain with the government and the govt.'s actions.

And, in response to the "if you don't respect the flag then shut the fuck up", I find that to be fairly interesting. If the flag represents freedom etc then that includes the freedom to burn a flag if we so chose, and to stand up and tell the government when it has done something to piss us off. I don't think freedom means "free, unless you have opposing views to the govt.".

Shirly Phelps-Roper has actually been charged with a crime in Nebraska for participating in flag burning (I believe it was her grandson doing the burning). While I despise the Phelps clan (they are horrible, hateful people), in this case I agree with them. They did nothing illegal.

Our country is founded on FREEDOMS. You may well not like that someone burns the flag, but it's their right to express themselves in that manner. Telling them to shut the fuck up is, imho, more disrespectful to those who fought and died for this country. Because they fought and died for our right to express ourselves as we see fit.

Even if that means burning a piece of material in protest.

People need to get over the flag burning thing. Congress has taken WAY too much time debating this. Its a flag, a piece of cloth. If someone wants to burn it, they have every right to. A flag is not what makes a country last time I checked.

I understand you wern't being rude, but considering how you feel about the flag and the freedoms it represents, isn't it oxymoronical (if that's the right word) to ask people to stfu? You know, 1st amendment and all.

And I like the quote   however, I feel like the flag is not representative of the soldiers since many of them disagree with the choices the government makes on their behalf. The people who represent the flag are the people who make decisions under it. Unfortunately I don't think that the democratic process in the US is effective enough that politicians frequently act with their constituency in mind... unless they're baconating bills and whatnot.

I think that once a person feels a symbol no longer represents something of substance, but in fact is used to rally blind support, that symbol deserves to be burned. Of course, that's only one reason I'd burn a flag, I'm sure I could come up with more.

I think it is a persons right to do that if they choose but because of what the flag stands for and means to so many people I do find it disrespectful.

I do not disagree with burning "the flag" or even hanging it upside down...There are many veterans who have fought for this country only to come home and to be spit on (Vietnam War) or not taken care of by the goverment..

The treatment of the soldiers has nothing to do with the burning of the flag. Although, I do agree. I think the govt. does a shitty job of taking care of the people they sent to fight wars.
