Murder Victims... Racism?

I am watching Law & Order CI and this black lady whose daughter wasmissing wrote to a news station to publicize (sp?) her dissapearance to get help. Same thing happened weeks later to a white girl & the news caster who the other woman wrote to came to her house w/ the white woman wanting to cast the story on tv now. The black woman said "Don't confuse my despiration with not knowing what you did... A black girl goes missing & its put in the shadows & a white girl goes missing & it's in the spot light". (Or something to that effect.)

To me, that is true. In reality this has happened quite a bit. A black girl is murdered or missing & there isn't any news coverage, or not as much as a white girl. =\ It's not fair, but it's true.

A couple years ago there was a case of a little black girl around 12 who had been kidnapped or something & around the same time this white girl FAKED her dissapearance & kidnapping. Her story was broadcasted like none other & put in tabloids, magazines, etc. before anyone even found out SHE faked her kidnapping. Anyone remember this? (I may not be 100% on the facts about the little black girl, like the age. Like I said, it wasn't covered by the news too much.)

Anyone else noticed this or have any opinions?

It may be true, I really avoid the news with the exception of the weather bc there is way too much thats massively depressing... But I did see that episode of L&O and I kind of wonder what everyone elses take is on it too.

I don't watch the news really but it really makes me mad when people base everything on racism.

Yeah, I don't really watch the news either. In Moore, OK the first murder of the year happened like last week. =\ It's awkward when things like that happen in your own town.

I mean my parents live in OKC & I know there are a ton of murders, lots of ghettos too lol. So a lot of people die. I dunno about Tulsa, but it is a big city. So I bet it's about the same. Moore is just smaller, like smaller than Norman. But not TOO small haha. You kind of feel like you know half the people that live there but you don't lol.

Natesmomma I agree. I really dont have much to say about this, except my uncle just died, and it wasnt on the news. And if a cop beats up a white guy he was "resisting" but if they beat up a black or hispanic person, it's because they are racist. Not only white people are racist.

I don't know if it's racism but I'd like to know why they aren't as publicised based on race.....

I think it has less to do with race and more do with social standing. Look at Natalee Hollaway.. The only reason we heard so much about her is because she had rich parents. Sad but true.. Money speaks.

lol, i know this... my family is Mexican. =\ My parents are Jewish. I had to leave a school because people hated me for being Jewish just because I was different. They were white.... That whole school was white. I am white.

Yeah, last I heard we were well over 50 murders for the year.Idunno if they or missing persons are publicised equally or not tho. I just know that there are so many its too sad to watch anymore.

I deffinately agree!!! & it's sad to say, but it may be the area where I came from but in some communities murders occur more. Accross the damn street of my parents house when I was a kid, in the ghetto there was a body covered by a tarp on the side walk.... If that was like in a better neighborhood it deffinately would have been on the news.

i agree with what someone posted in response to money talks, but i do think that some cases are publicized based on race, as well as social standings, finacial standings and all that jazz. just like it was said before, sad but very true.

money does talk!!! remeber lacy peterson? she was my sisters godmother and they news coverage on her all through the us! and another girl went missing from stanislaus county too (where she was from) and we barely heard anything about it! its sad!

There's probably something to this. I personally think there's a mix of racism and privilege (money) at work here, because there definitely is a disparity between the way these situations are usually in the media.
