Really? On Channel 7 news they were all talking about it starting in Cali. Florida was actually last on the suspicion list from what I heard on the news.

Ok, they're being investigated. Did they ever get any results from the investigation? All I'm reading is that "it may be linked to Mexico and Florida." I'm not trying to debate with you here, I just want to make sure I'm not eating the tomatoes down here for a while till we're in the clear.

I know people from all over were affected, I am just saying VA is included in that. I have also read that they are saying tomatos may not be the cause of this, but they arent ruling them out as the cause. They are just starting to look at other produce as well. I am just trying to be on the safe side not feeding them to my son. Im still eating them though, I love tomatoes!

this is the government we are talking about... they never do anything right... and not all cases of salmonella happen in Florida.... But if you want to take the credit, then take it, when I hear of salmonella I think of dirty nasty stuff, people who don't wash their hands before handling food... but if you want to take that credit, go right ahead..... Personally if WI was ever the begining of an ourbreak like this, I wouldn't go announcing it to the world.... jmo

Just make sure you buy the tomatos still on the vine or buy cherry tomatoes. They are still in the clear. Flordia is on the list of safe places, but only from certain counties in Florida. Here is the list straight from the FDA website:

July 5, 2008: At this time, FDA recommends consuming raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw red round tomatoes only if grown and harvested from the following areas that HAVE NOT BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE OUTBREAK:
  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Florida (counties of: Jackson, Gadsden, Leon, Jefferson, Madison, Suwannee, Hamilton, Hillsborough, Polk, Manatee, Hardee, DeSoto, Sarasota, Highlands, Pasco, Sumter, Citrus, Hernando, Charlotte)*
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Dominican Republic
  • Guatemala
  • Israel
  • Mexican States (Aguascalientes, Baja California Norte, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Colima, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Distrito Federal, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, México, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Tobasco, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Yucatán, Zacatecas)
  • Netherlands
  • Puerto Rico

* Shipments of tomatoes harvested in these counties are acceptable with a certificate issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

And all of those counties in Florida are where most of the farming occurs, and they aren't associated with the outbreak. I think a lot of the local outbreaks down here in South Florida is because we import a lot of our produce from other states. But from what I have read, there are only 2 reported cases of tomato salmonella poisoning in the state of florida.

im assuming that must be in the clear, because two nights ago when i got that burger, it had tomatoes on it, and lots of the BIG name fast food resturant pulled the tomatoes, and some stores pull them from CERTAIN states, i would say if your not too sure, call your health department, to check your central area, thats what my step mom did for our area, lake county

Yeah, Florida seems pretty safe. I would still just buy the tomatoes on the vine though, you dont want to take any chances!

Yea a lot of places down here pulled the tomatoes originally like quiznos, chili's, subway, and other restaurants. But they all have tomatoes again, I think I'll stick to the vine ripe tomatoes for the time being.
