Spitting Up and Gas

posted 4th Jul
My daughter is spitting up almost every feeding. She wants to feed more after she spits up, (and she spits up quite a large amount.) The spit up is curdled, if that means anything, and is sometimes projectile. Should I call the doctor, or is this just a first time mom concern? She is also very gassy and fussy. We have been on meds for Thrush for a week now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

When I had to give my son Nystatin, he also seemed a lot gassier, but I really don't know if it was related or not...

My daughter spit up a lot too, it ended up being the formula. I had to put her on soy, and she was fine after that. There are also formulas for gassy and spit up. You could also talk to her doctor, and see what they say.

Sry I think there should be a sticky about it because it seems like everyday someone asks about it:

My daughter has reflux... (mild IMO)... she takes Zantac three times a day, I feed her at an incline (30 degree), I burp her FREQUENTLY... she gags a lot. Also, I feed her small amounts at a time so she doesn't get overfull and spit up or projectile vomit. She hiccups after almost every feeding. She sleeps on an AR pillow now, but before I had it she slept either in a bouncy chair or a car seat.

I have read on it quite a bit. Wheezing is normal and inconsolable crying with back arching.. (though my daughter doesn't do those two things). Most babies outgrow this at 4 to 5 months old.

Most babies have gas and because their GI system is immature, it is painful for them. You can get baby gas drops at any pharmacy. Pick up some gripe water while you are there, if the gas drops don't work, the gripe water may.

edit to add: I exclusively breastfeed, also. I started watching my diet, too because I was thinking that it might be something I am eating. I had to cut out dairy, chocolate, & peanut products.

Thanks for the info. I thought something I had in my diet too was causing her gassiness/fussiness and spitting up. I've cut out a lot as well.

We've been using the Gripe Water for the last couple of days, but it only seems to help for a few minutes. I am so lost at what else to do! She just wants to eat all the time and then she spits up. As soon as you put her down, she screams. It;s so frustrating! What can I do over the weekend if it's acid reflux? Thanks again!

Feed her with her head upright, burb when she is taking in too much air.. make her go slow... & put her to sleep in a bouncy chair or car seat...

Lydia has reflux and is strictly breastfed.  Here are the things I cut out that helped.  Try taking them out of your diet and then you can add things in one at a time to see the reaction once you've gotten it under control:
Spicy foods such as mexican and italian (at 6 months we still can't have these)
chocolate (this has been added back in recently and we're doing okay with it)
milk (only straight milk, not all dairy products for us, but if these things don't work you can try all dairy)
coffee
ALL pop whether caffeine free or not
broccoli (gassy)
Tomatoey stuff
acidic things (citrus especially)

It took us about 2 weeks after cutting stuff out to notice a major difference.  She still spit up but instead of being curdled and going through 6 bibs and 3 outfits a day, we were getting 3 spit ups in a whole day.  there was less pain with it.

Remember, spitting up is normal.  Pain with spitting up and projectiling is not.

Some other things that helped us (other than above and what LL H said) are:
baby massage
bicycling the legs
gripe water (which was mentioned but I can't stress enough)
feeding with her sitting on my lap or laying on my tummy with me on my back (this made it so the milk was not going in so fast because we also have an overactive letdown problem.  It also helps to make baby not have it coming back up so easily)
BURP BURP BURP
Upright for 30 minutes after a feed.  Not in bouncy or whatever, but in our arms and upright over our shoulder.

I hope this works for you.  You can try this before medicating.  Give it 2 weeks to a month and if it's still not working and she's in a ton of pain then seek the doctor's opinion and try getting zantac or prevacid.

I know you're strictly breastfeeding, but another method that helps with babies who are being bottled fed is putting in a teaspoon of rice cereal...I know it's a bit unorthadox, but my son has acid reflux and I tried everything in my power to help him with out resorting to the cereal, but when nothing seemed to be working I finally caved in and bought the rice cereal and added it to his bottle at night...Another thing I added was Culturelle...It's the live cultures that you find in yogurts that help your digestive system, and it has helped so much...He sleeps better at night, he's stopped spitting up, and when he's gassy he toots so easily!! He's a lot happier now since we've started him with his "special bottle"..It's made a world of difference

this is something to only do under dr.s orders.  We tried giving Lydia a bottle of expressed milk once a day with some cereal in it.  It made it worse.  I wouldn't recommend it for a breastfed baby!

We're going through a similar situation with our 4 month old daughter. I didn't know babies had reflux until we found blood in her spit-up and rushed her to the pediatrician's office. She's breast fed only and refuses a bottle. Her Mom is on a very strict diet: no soy, leafy veggies, acidic foods, eggs, milk, etc. We tried soy formula which made her worse. Wealso tried Nutramigen, same outcome. Rice cereal mixed with breast milk, worse still. Our GI doctor (yes there are infant GI specialists!) has prescribed Prevacid solutabs and she's been on it for a week now and it has really helped with the reflux. We burp her more frequently and keep her upright for 20 minutes after feedings. She's still gassy, but not painfully so. Her demeanor has changed dramatically. Now she's a happy and somewhat less drooly and spit-up covered baby.
