Anti-depressants

posted 4th Jul
Me and my Doc have discussed putting me back on my anti-depressants and i think im actually going to do it.

I was diagnosed with depression when i was 15. i tried to kill myself and had to stay in a hospital for a few weeks...i took them for about a year befor i decided i would rather be naturally sad then artifically happy...which really ment i was just going to start drinking and smoking more

after i found out i was pregnant i obviously couldnt do the regular things that i did to deal with my depression. I brought up to the baby's daddy that i was considering going back on them and he told me No...he didnt want a drugged up wife and mother and depression is just something i need to "grow out of'"

i tried to just be happy....but this has taken over. i had one of the best days of my life the other day but it didnt matter...i cant stop these feelings.

I guess my point is i sorta feel like maybe i will bea bad mother...i dont know why i feel like that but i do....I know this is a personal question but is anyone else out there pregnant and taking them? or a mother and taking them? is it a better choice for you?

I think you should do whats best for your baby. I dealt with depression when i was younger, but fortunately i grew out of it. If taking pills will make you feel better about life and yourself without hurting your baby then do it! Just dont abuse the pills, and if your babys dad doesnt like it, tell him to kick rocks. You have to make yourself happy before you can make anyone else happy, including your baby. Do whats right for you. I hope things get better for you, and dont worry, you will be a great mom!

What is the drug the doctor wants to put you back on .. remember a baby fetus that is exposed earlier to anti-depression med's is likely to have alot of defects ... I was on olanzapine before becoming pregnant but stopped it during pregnancy just to be on the safe side ...

I take Effexor XR, through my pregnancy and breastfeeding, because I frankly do not function well without medication.

There have been no complications.

There are quite a few anti-depressants that are considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

This is only correct with some anti-depressants, not all.

An anti-depressant that is a benzodiazepine would definitely be off limits, but some of the SSRI and SNRIs are safe.

No matter what anyone says, depression is not something you can simply "grow out of". It's almost always a lifelong illness. Taking medication does not make you a bad mother. Don't you think that if your sad all the time you won't be able to do as much with/for your child? that is what will make a bad mother. You need to be happy and take care of yourself before you can do the same for your baby. If the medicine makes you feel better, then you should probably start taking it again, and if you don't want ot stay on the meds forever then try therapy, and maybe eventually you won't need the meds.

I understand how you're feeling, I was also diagnosed at 15, with severe depression and an anxeity disorder. I took meds for a few months... but then my boyfriend at the time(what a jerk) convinced me to stop taking them because my parents were making me take them so they could control me, or some bogus story like that. But then I resorted to drugs and drinking(mainly drinking). I got pregnant and had to stop all that... I would be back on medication but my doctor said I need to just "tough it out" (I'll be changing doctors as soon as my baby's born).

anyways I wish you luck with whatever you decide ... if you need to chat I'm here. *HUGS*

thank you very much...i was worried too but my doc said there are some that are safe....and a healthy mom on meds is better then a mommy hurting herself

Quoting TaraBanana- 61 days to go:“ Thank you”

Believe me , it has been a roller coaster ride for me ... constant fights with my husband and my family ... being over worried over little things about the baby , over-reacting , spending too much money on nothing ... difficulty sleeping , even suicidal thoughts .. but then i think about the baby and a LITTLE of the depression goes away ... its really hard i know ... !!
