Birth positions

posted 3rd Jul
I know I have issues with the "typical" birth position. This time around I want a differant position but have not been able to decide. What did you use, or what have you heard of, that may be better?

I heard being on your hands and knees is a better position than the "typical" birth position. My sister-in-law tried it with her second son and liked it better than the usual position. That is how she gave birth to my last nephew as well.

i just saw something about this on tv a while ago and they said the best position was the squatting position. IDK though... i've never gone though labor so i wouldn't know!

Yes, squatting is supposed to be good because it opens the pelvic area more and gravity helps.... so I've heard..

Yeah my birthing class instructor told us squatting can give you up to 30% more space for the baby to come out, but pretty much ANY position besides laying on your back or sitting up is going to help. Laying on your back and putting pressure on your sacrum closes your pelvis.

im planning on the squatting position. because of the gravity affects as well as it being a rather comfortable position to me. during the active labor, i plan on sitting on the birthing ball and then once he is ready, im jumping into the squattin position.

I had mine in the squatting position...I hadn't planned to, but just went with the flow. I labored in the water, then when it was time to push, I walked up to my husband who was sitting on the couch, bend over putting my hands on his knees, and got into a semi-squat and pushed for less than 20 minutes and he was out! Didn't get any stitches or anything...I got a TEENY TINY tear on the upper labia, but nothing that hurt to pee or anything. The nice thing with this position if gravity helps, and they can decend easier...I also got to receive him myself =)

I KNOW I am posting this website too much, but it has a lot of good (/ terrifying) information on it.

Use the menu bar on the right to select different positions, it's got 13 different positions. I know it's a "natural" birth site, but even if you're not going natural you can do a lot of these positions if you at least get a walking epi n' stuff.

Also a lot of them are really good for back labour, some are really good for pushing, etc.

I like the idea of squatting to push, but even my little half-assed "practice" squats I get tired after a couple of seconds, so positions like the Dangle (hehe) seem good.

I am going natural!   The only thing I may allow is saline if I am dehydrated. Thank you.

I am just one of those people that likes to do it the good ol fashion way. I watched a water birth on the baby story a week ago and that didn't seem like fun to me, I'm glad the girl that did it enjoyed it, but not me. And squatting isn't comfortable for me now, so I'm pretty sure I'm not going to want to do it then. I have a lot of inhibitions with a few things and this is just one of them. I know what I am comfortable with and I'm going with what seems right for me. I had my first very easily and I'm going to do the same with this one. Each to his own I guess. Whatever your comfortable with is what you should do. But I am definitely having an epidural again. Made things easier for me.
