re: Aunty VS. Teacher (opinons please)

posted 3rd Jul
Wow, tell me the name of the school because I am mad enough to call! That is such crap! It's one thing to set healthy guidlines, I think most parents would even appreciate it, but if they are going to be that excessive about it, they either need to provide free lunches, or they need to hand out complete lists of EXACTLY what a child can and can't bring. It shouldn't just be left up to the teacher to decide. That is absurd. I'm fuming. Every day I find another reason to homeschool...

I understand that. I'm not saying anything about the kids getting suspended.... other than it wasn't their fault.

I'm saying that the OP was childish and packed everything she knew she should NOT have packed. Just to "get back" at the teacher.

Now the girls are suspended becasue of the OP's actions.

Yeah but I'm sure no one in their right mind suspected that they would be suspended because of that. Maybe it wasn't the best idea for her to do that, I'll agree with you there....I guess I am just looking at the suspension as the bigger and more important issue.

I'm not saying the suspension isn't an important issue, because it is. I'm just saying that the OP knew that her snacks were not what the school wanted before and she went ahead and packed snacks that were even worse.

However, I don't believe that a school should dictate what you can pack for your child, but if they had that kind of rule then you should try to follow it or talk to the principal. Have a meeting before packing snacks you KNOW are not allowed......

I don't mean to cause trouble. I just wanted to clarify my opinion.

I completely agree with you. No one will argue that the original snacks were healthy enough and it was absurd to say that aren't. But on the other hand, after the OP realized there was a problem then she caused even more problems by packing the chips & soda. YES! The rules are ridiculous, but now the children are suffering. NO ~ the kids should not have been suspended BUT this all could have been avoided if the OP wouldn't have acted childish and packed that lunch. All I'm saying is that it could have been avoided.

I am going to start off saying that I am a teacher myself.

I agree you completely- I believe that the origional snacks were healthy and I do not see a problem with them. However,it appears thatthe school has a strict policy in place as to what the children can and cannot bring in their lunch. I am sure it is written out in the parent handbook as well as the consequences as to what happens if the policy is not met. There is a big problem now a days with parent communication. Rather than purposly sending in stuff that she knew was not acceptable (which was asking for trouble) shen shouldhave picked up a pen and paper - or even a phone - and explained her situation to the teacher or principal. Tell her that she is just the aunt and she is not sure exactly what is acceptable and if a list could be provided. I am sure the teacher would have had noproblem with providing her one. Sending in chips and pop was just childish and immature!

Before all you mothers go and critize me, and call me "childish" what I did fixed many things in the classroom. I showed the teacher that what I was serving the kids were perfectly healthy compaired to what lunches could of been. I got phone calls from other mothers saying they would recieve letters and messages on their answering machines critizing their packed lunches. My purpose of doing that was proving to the teacher that a bannana muffin isnt that bad. I guess my childish acts worked as if she has any problem with lunches she must report to the principle before taking matters in her own hands. The school has a strict policy of what children can and cannot bring in their lunch, not one thing I packed before was on the list of cannots. The principle has appologized to me and allowed the girls to get the work they missed on the days of suspension. My brother and his wife laugh at what I did and dont find it childish and other mothers in the class are happy they now don't recieve phone calls saying they are packing unhealthy lunches!

Good!! I knew that the principal wouldn't have that. Geesh! I am glad that other parents were in the same boat as you and the teacher wasn't just picking on your nieces. Hopefully she won't be treating anyone that way anymore! Good for you guys!

I'm glad something got done about it! And I don't think it was childish at all. I think it was a creative way to make your point

If my daughter's teacher did that, I'd just say screw it and send her lunch money. That teacher is a crazy control freak, but I'm glad you got it all resolved. I'm sorry you had to go through that, especially with the sickness in the family.
