Baby Food And Cereal

posted 3rd Jul
My son will be 4 months old on the 7th and we tried cereal last night and he kept gagging himself so I tried some baby food and he did the same thing. What should I do to get him to be interested in it?? What was your baby first encounter with baby food like and how long did it take for them to like it if they didnt the first time?? Also how many times a day should he have cereal, baby food and should he have a bottle after?? Can you tell I'm a new mom haha.

gagging is normal. they are still trying to figure out how to eat it so if it hits the gag reflex on its way down its no big deal once they learn it will stop

Should I make it a little watery so it easier going down or just make how it says on the box???

cereal can be made to any consistency you want, so making it watery could be a good idea until he gets used to it, then you can make a little thicker

you offer him a bottle BEFORE eating solids. His main source of nutrition should still be from formula or breastmilk, so he should always get that first. Offer solids about 30 minutes to an hour after a bottle.

If he does continue to gag, there will be no harm in waiting a few more weeks. a lot of babies aren't ready at 4 months.

yup. later on as he starts eating more and more solids(for my daughter it was around 8 months old)then he might not eat as much formula as before. but for now, make sure he is still getting at least 24 oz a day.

Ok and just keep him on the same feeding schedule??? I dont want to feed him too much.

yea. for the time being he doesn't really need solids..so offering them once or twice a day is fine. he probably won't even eat that much at a time since he should be filling up on a bottle an hour or so before.

This is Emily's 3rd week on solids. The 1st week was just cereal, 2nd week she had cereal for breakfast, then greenbeans for lunch, this week we are doing peas.

For her, she was way ready for them and never gagged ... yet anyway. But she gets her cereal 1st thing, and her normal bottle right after, same thing at lunch. All babies are different with it.

Just be sure to do 2 things:

#1 pull a small amount of food from the container and feed from another bowl, so you are not double dipping so to speak. Their saliva can contaminate the whole jar, that is why you don't double dip.

#2 Make sure to feed only 1 solid food item for at least 4 days ... reason for this is because if he has a reaction (rash breaking out whatever) you will know what food caused it. I say this because from you post you are trying to introduce cereal and baby food at the same time. So if he has a reaction you will not know which it is from.

Just suggestions to you. Good luck!

Great advice....I couldn't have said it better myself so I won't even try!

Oh and Gavin has never gagged on cereal either. But I have heard that it is normal the first couple of times a baby has solids.

Thank you, but I really cannot take the credit all myself! A very dear sweet lady on here "Eastons mom" helps me out. She is a Godsend to me!
