Maternity leave for highschoolers..
posted 2nd Jul
Do you think pregnant girls in highschool should recieve some kind of maternity leave? Why or why not?
I think they absolutely should...by denying them that is kind of like saying there are lesser of a mother because of their age, need to deal with it, and shut up about it..Sure there are plenty of horrible teen mothers out there, and horrible adult mothers as well...
I graduated from an alternative high school that was about 30-40 percent either pregnant girls, or people already with children..(I was neither lol, I didn't get pregnant till after I graduated..)..anyways, when these girls would leave to have their children, their teacher worked with them, brought them their work I believe, they had to do it amongst other things, and then returned to school as normal, all caught up to where they should be. I saw sooooo many girls gradate that I don't think normaly would, and ultimately, the newborn baby will benefit from an educated mother.
I only see this as doing good...it's not a reward at all. Why doesn't a mother in highschool deserve the same recovery as any other mother, or that time to be home with their baby? And by this post, I in no way condone getting pregnant in highschool, I think it is very irresponsible, but it DOES happen..
I got pregnant right before I started college, had Jake in the spring semester, missed 2 classes and went straight back by choice...I had to maintain a 4.0, and sure it was tough and there are plenty of things I wish I coudl've done with my son then, but in the long run, my college education will benefit him greatly...
anyways, what is y'alls opinions??

I believe they should. They need that proper medical and time with baby, same as any mommy, but they should catch up on missed school work so they dont fall behind. They DEF should be allowed maternity leave.... just like any mommy!

We had the same type of school in Arlington. I don't think it really promoted teen pregnancy because they were in their own school. If they had maternity leave while in normal school I would say no because their chances of catching up would be really hard but at a work at your own pace school I would agree.

i think they should get maternity leave for their PP recovery of 6 weeks... physically, all women need that six weeks to heal properly... but i dont think anyone is ENTITLED to anything else

my school has home bound, its where you can't go to school and they bring the work to you.
not sure how long you get it, maybe the full 6 weeks.
eh, idk.

I think they should be entitled to maternity leave. A woman's body needs time to heal after giving birth and I feel it may cause more health related problems if they don't get the time off, making it more likely that they'll miss more school than they would if they had it off to begin with.

If you are a teenager in high school, you should not be pregnant to begin with, IMO. But no, you want maternity leave, grow up, graduate, have a career and EARN your maternity leave. JMO. (Not you personally, obviously) )

they should get maternity leave AFTER having the baby. They should NOT get maternity in the week or days leading up to it. If my co-workers can go into labor at work in the military, they can start at school. (i know that part wasnt the debate, just wanted to throw that in there)

Well it is obviously happening. How do you feel about alternative schools for pregnant teens?

so...say you commit a crime...like accidentally running a red light...you shouldn't be doing that anyways, so the cop stops you and pulls you over to lock you up for a year? same damn thing (almost lol)...definitley not fair... IMO, that will only set the pregnant teen up for failure by saying she fucked up, way worse than others have, therefore she gets what every other woman gets, taken away...being in high shcool can be tough already, plus being pregnant, then a child...

That's what my friend did that got pregnant in high school. Her home bound lasted until her doctor gave her the ok to go back. I think schools should do that instead of maternity leave. That way you're still getting your education and won't have to make up missed work.

I was on homebound from around 30 weeks, until 6 weeks PP.
I was on bedrest though.

I think they should be allowed to miss school in the weeks following their delivery (and beforehand, obviously, if a doctor decides it's necessary). It should be the same time period as disability from a job(but not being paid, obviously, unless they are working before the birth). I do think they should have to keep up w/ the work, and that it is their own responsibility to get the work from the teacher or from a classmate that is willing to bring it to them. I don't think the teacher should have to bring the student's work to her though...It is the student's responsibility to make sure that she is keeping up (think- if you have chickenpox, or a broken leg, or something else that makes it impossible/unhealthy to go to school...you still have to do the work, you just don't go to class).

i think the recovery time is really important, they have to recover fully and bond with their infant. It's just not fair to them to deny it. At least if its not mandated they should be allowed to make up thier work and work with the school to make it happen. Their lives and the lives of their children aren't any less important because they have thier kids earlier than society would prefer. they are just as valueable.
