birthmarks

posted 2nd Jul
I've been wanting to post a topic about this subject for quite a while now but afraid it might be a big of a touchy one, well anyway; here goes. My Dad has a birthmark on his right cheek that he struggled with a lot when he was younger as it's quite large. He was bullied a lot for it and felt very insecure. So much so, that to this day he covers it up every day. I myself never thought much of it until one day my Granny told us how worried she was that one of us (me, my brother and sisters) would come out with the same. She told me how upsetting it was for her. So throughout this pregnancy it has been a worry of mine, and a difficult one at that as there is nothing you can do to prevent it. I sometimes feel shallow and horrible for worrying about such a thing but I am only wanting the best for my baby. I don't want him to grow up and be bullied or have anything that would make him feel different and therefor insecure. Of course no matter what my babe looks like I will love him completely but other people can be cruel and make life hard. I'm not sure if birthmarks are passed down, I just want to see him already!

Birth marks are not hereditary.

Port wine stains and strawberry marks occur in about 3/1000 births (these are the 2 that are red/purple, can be large and raised.)

your son's birthmark is very small. My Dad covers practically the whole of his right cheek. I love it on him as it makes him special and unique but I know he had a lot of trouble growing up with it. My sister was born with a 'strawberry' on the top of her head and her bum but they both went away after a few months I think (well I don't know how long exactly) but they are gone now.

kids can be crule, but if it does happen iw ould teach him to be proud of it no matter what anyone says, tell him/her that its one of the things that makes him special and different from any other child, and you wont be lieing because it will be true and that his real friends wont care about it because they will see him for who he is not what he looks like

My grandfather, my mother, her sister and me all have the same birthmark in the same spot and the same shape... I beg to differ. LOL

interesting and I've heard of stories similar to this before. but since none of my brothers or sisters have it and I look more like my mother I don't think there is much of a chance. I mean if everyone had the same birthmarks as their parents then they'd be a lot more common then they are.

That's right. It's not common, I don't think you should worry. =p

is location/shape of
birthmarks is hereditary?
In general the answer to this question is also
negative: sporadic birthmarks generally represent a somatic mutation which
occurred as an individual grew from an embryo. The affected region
represents all the cells descended from the single cell where the mutation
originally occurred. Thus, a mutation early in embryogenesis can affect a
large area on a person's body, while a late mutation will affect a
proportionately smaller area. However, because the mutation happened at
random during development, the likelihood that any two individuals will have
exactly the same birthmark is pretty small. Kind of like snowflakes. If
you look at your birthmark and compare it with your family, I will bet
that you will find subtle but significant differences between them.

my sister was born with a big birth mark on the side of her face that went to under her chin.. she had it removed with lazer treatment when she was about 13 and it is totally unnoticable now.

she had a baby in december and he has no birthmarks at all.

please dont worry about it but if it does happen then there is things that can be done its not a life sentence.

Its not common so don't worry. Even though my birth mark is the size of a half-dollar, on my right temple, my birthmark is green. My aunt told me that it's a collard green (my fav food  ). My aunt has noticed every birthmark on her kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews. And we all have some type of food... [steak, fish, collard green, strawberry, etc..] Some told me it's a Mongolian Birthmark but I was informed they only show up on lower backs and "buttocks". But it's been my unique trademark. If your child does have a birthmark like your dad.. explain it and inform them that it makes them unique. It will hurt to get picked on, but they will realize that that makes them who they are.

We have... many times. Hahaha.
We can't explain it, but it's all the same shape and colour. Well it's mole, so it's easier for it to be the same shape and colour. It's about 10 cm from top to bottom, and ironicly it's on all of our left butt cheek same spot. LOL
Yes... we all have a big mole on our butts. Hahaha! And yes it is a birthmark, we were all born with it. Though grandpa's is a little darker and hairy... but that's becasue he is hairy and old. LOL
