Breast milk question

posted 1st Jul
I pump and freeze breast milk every day (on top of nursing, since I produce a TON of milk), and we use that stored milk when I'm away from my daughter. My question is this- after the frozen breast milk is thawed and warmed, how long is it good for? Say my daughter drinks some, doesn't finish the milk, then wants more half an hour to an hour later. Is that leftover milk still good, or should it be tossed?

Breastmilk can sit out longer than formula because of its bacteria-fighting properties. i think it is an hour after it has been thawed, but I don't remember exactly. Formula is supposed to be thrown out because the bacteria builds up in it so fast, but I felt ok with keeping breastmilk out for an hour or so & letting mine finish up as he wanted. Mine rarely took a bottle though, so I'm no expert.

It can be offered at the next feeding before it needs to be discarded. Here is a great reference.

How long can thawed milk be safely used?
If milk has been frozen and thawed it can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours for later use. It should not be refrozen. There is very little evidence to know if stored, warmed, and partially consumed milk can continue to be used. One study suggests that it is safe to continue to feed previously used milk up to 1 to 2 hours after it has been prepared. Any unused milk should then be discarded.
