Babyshower.Have you heard of this,or had one?

I was talking with a close family friend, and I was telling this friend that my cousin is pregnant, and so is my bestfriend. I'm real excited for them. Their happy as ever too!! But she [the friend] was saying that once she had a family member who lived hours, and hours away, but was expecting..The family wanted to throw her a shower, but she wouldn't be able to attend due to being so far away. So, they still had the shower, even though she wasn't there. They had refreshments, gifts, everything,etc..have you heard of this before? And then, they just mailed everything to the mother-to-be.

The only time I have heard of a shower without the mom is if she went into labor and was at the hospital and they decided to go ahead with the shower since everyone was already invited.

same here... we taped it tho so she could see what a great party it was... not to make her feel bad but to let her know we were all excited about her baby!!

Yep, I threw a variation of this for my little sister since she is married to military and not near any family, and now my mom is doing the same for me. They even have websites now where the mom to be can either have a small gather with local people and give others the web address to participate via web cam, have an entirely online shower or what my mother is doing- a baby shower in a box, everyone is sending her cards etc. for me and the baby and then I will get them all in a big box along with decorations and surprises etc. from her to be opened on the day of my local shower so that it is all caught on video for all of my family out of state! This works especially well for us since I have NO family in AK.

It's a good idea, if she really could not be present. I've never heard of it before.

I'm the sensitive type that would be completely hurt if they had a party and went as far as taped it but I couldn't be there. I know they mean well but shit, watching other people have fun and party is a bit of a downer.

I had a mail shower, but they basically all just mailed the presents at the same time, no party anywhere. I think it's a cute idea. I know that one time I had to miss out on a gathering while I was living in Germany and my friends still set a place for me and put a gnome (inside joke) at my place. I loved it!

I am having something similar, but a little bit stranger IMO, I just found out the other day, that my DH family's friends are having a 'gift drop off' for the baby a month before she is due, with an invitation to a meet the baby party at a later date after she is born.
I am embarrassed by this (i think doing it this was is tacky, not necessarily the way yours is b/c there is still a party involved, this is like- hey bring her presents.... ugh) , my mil didn't even know about it till she received an invitation! and they have yet to mention it dirrectly to us, we just heard it through the grapevine.
