Adoption Social Studie question

posted 1st Jul
I am having our Social Worker come by tonight for our social study. My husband is adoptin my oldest child. Her real father has signed over cutody to me so there is no contesting it, but what should I expect. Do they surch your house or just tlak to you or what??

Anyone who has done this before please let me know what to be ready for. I am not nervouse just anxious I guess. The un-known is killing me.

Thanks

i doubt they search your house. when my step dad adopted me i was in 3rd grade so i dont remember a lot, but they came and talked to us, and me, and we all had to go to 2 psychiatrists(one of our choosing, one of my grandparents)and my parents had to get mental evaluaions because my grandparents from my real dad was fighting us about it.

They usually dont do a home study unless the child is in state careor from an adoption agency... but I dont know TX policy... A social study just goes over your family history and background information and you shouldnt be scared!! Social workers are awesome. I wish you best, and I would love to know how your experience goes.

I will reply tomorrow with an update.
It should be easy since there is no one contesting it. We just have to follow procedure. It is just like wow it is finally happening and getting done. I can't wait. And Then they report if it is the best for the child or not and go over our background checks and I have to see the child advocate after the social study.

So That is why I wondered what all they do to make the decision if it is best or not since this is all she knows anyway???

they probably won't obviously"search" your house, but they will take note of the conditions of your home (i.e. cleanliness) as long as its nothing out of the ordinary (i.e. like thousands of roaches crawling around) then you'll be fine. i'm not sure what the process is in this sort of situation, but i've worked withsocial workers and I dont thinkany of the families realized we were actually taking note of their lifestyle even though we just seemed ever so friendly.

Awwww. that makes us sound like we're out to get you. It really depends on why they are there in the first place. And usually, if there is a concern you talk about it with the family not just write it up in the report to "get them". And about the liquor bottles... umm.. Thats depends? Are theyhalf empty bottles of Skol/ Jack laying onthe floor or around outside or are theycompletely empty, cleaned, and dusted unique bottlesset uphightodisplay?I am a children's service worker and I have liqour bottles on display at my home. I dontreally think its a big deal.

It def wouldn't hurt to just like put them in a cabinet or something. Anything in plain view that might make someone get the"wrong idea" would be good to take out of plain sight, but again, it's not likely thattheyare going to ask tosee your kitchen or something, but may end up taking a trip to the restroom, or askingyour daughter to show them her room. I know that's what we did, but again,I'm not sure how this particular situation works.

ok thank you. We do have decoration bottles but only a few and 2 bottles that are half full but up on top of a wine wrack that we have. I will take them down. I don't want it to look like we are heavy drinkers becasuse we arn't. I just didn't know since most homes will have some alcohol but most are not on display I am sure. Thanks for the advice. Not to mention the alcohol is absinth and not exactly sold here.

And O I hope she asks to see her room. It is super cute and I just re arranged the house up there last week. That would make me happy.

So we had our visit last night.

It went great. She came in and asked questions and we had a visit. She played with the girls and was just the sweetest lady. She did go to the bathroom and asked to be shown around. She went in every room and even my laundry room.

Thank you for the info and help yesterday. She said that she was excited to be a part of the adoption so that is promissing. And I did hide the liquore bottles.
