Is it ok to snoop on your kids?

Do you think it is okay to go through your childrens things as they get older and start going through their emails, texts, journals, personal letters, drawers, phones etc... so you know whats going on?

If not why?

Should children ever have real privacy in this day and age or no if they are under your roof they have no privacy?

It beter be, cause i sure as hell am gonna do it. I respect privacy but if my children give me a reason to suspect ANYHTING id do it in a heartbeat....

they can have privacy when they move out and have a place of their own...

Totally OK if you have reason to suspect they are doing something that could harm them. If my children are responsbile and trustworthy then I will never snoop, I do believe they need their privacy. If they loose that trust and I suspect they may be into drugs or something else like that, you better believe I will snoop. Trust is a privaledge, not a right.

I think kids need to have some privacy, but now as a parent I also realize it's our job to protect them and watch out for them. I don't think I would read a diary or a journal, but I would probably check things on the computer out, especially when they first start going online just because there are so many online pervs out there nowdays and kids don't always have the judgement to know the difference. I think it's more important to instill good values in our kids so they will be able to have better judgement and make good choices.

If I ever have a reason to believe that I should look through my childs things I certainly will..

I will trust my kids until they give me a reason not too. But I will let it be known that I will search their stuff whenever I want. Just to throw a little fear in LOL

My mom was very old school. She thought we were aloud a certain amount of privacy. But if she was in our rooms and making the bed, picking up laundry ect she would check things out. It kept us out of trouble and kept her in the loop. I think a lot of problems w/ teenagers today is to much privacy and not enough interest shown.

Will you let them know I'm going to go through your stuff or just start looking in case you find something?

My parents did that to me and I hated every bit of it.
But honestly, I don't know if I'll do it. I'm trying to avoid the parenting stuff and let my hubby do it.

my step mom went threw my stuff i hated it. My real mom never had to go threw my stuff i all ways told her every thing. Have in a little girl my self if we arent close like me and my mom ya i will go threw her stuff in need be.

No I don't think that's ok at all. My parents never did that with us. If something is suspected, I think a parent should talk to the child and then go with the child together into their room and have the child go through his/her own thingsto look for whatever evidence, but I don't think parents should just be randomly snooping into their kids private journals or their drawers or anything just for fun. Trust needs to be created between the children and the parents and if parents are doing things like that, it doesn't build trust. Just my opinion.
