Pacifiers

posted 1st Jul
My daughter is 19 days old now. Is it too soon to give her a pacifier? The nurses at the hospital said to wait until she is 4 months because it can screw up her suck and I am breastfeeding. What do you think?

I read in baby magazine pacifiers help protect against SIDS when used during the first 6 months.

the hospital gave my daughter a pacifier before we even left the labor room (she had already had her snack, but was rooting), so I would say it's probably OK.

i have no idea what kind of nurse would tell you that. Thats crazy! Of course you should offer a pacifier to her. It helps reduce the risk of SIDS.

I have heard to wait until breastfeeding is established, but never 4 months!!!  Lydia got hers at birth pretty much. Like the next day, I think.  She nurses like a champ!

This is what kellymom.com says

When can I begin using a pacifier?
It is recommended that pacifiers and other types of artificial nipples be avoided for at least the first 3-4 weeks. I'd personally suggest that most breastfed babies - if they get a pacifier at all - would be better off without a pacifier until mom's milk supply is well established (6-8 weeks, usually) and the 6 week growth spurt is over. That way you've established a good milk supply and don't lose any much-needed breast stimulation to a pacifier

I would do it right away. I waited too long and my son never took to it. He is 6 months now and he sucks on it a few times and spits it out. But it definately would've been nice if he took to it right away.

My baby is 5 weeks almost 6 weeks old and just now will actually take one. I think it depends on the baby. If your baby will take it, I don't see a problem, they usually offer them in the hospital immediately anyways!
