Low sodium diet/high blood pressure help!

posted 30th Jun
Hi everyone! My husband has had border line high blood pressure for a
while (he gets it from his dad). Well he stepped on a light bulb the
other night and ended up in the ER to make sure he got all the glass
out of his foot. While there, the doctor informed him that he needs to
be on medication for his blood pressure so he gave him a prescription
until he can get in to see his normal doctor. He also wants to start
cutting sodium out of his diet. I've been trying to do some research,
and basically I got to stay away from processed food! lol. Well, I need
some ideas of what to shop for. Any suggestions of low sodium meals or
snacks would be great! Also any other advice for high blood pressure
maintenance would be helpful also!

Thanks!

You need to watch out for the chicken that are in the bag. Meat does not have a lot of sodium. Potatoes are good if they are not instant, lots of fresh fruit and veggies.

Fat free and low fat items have lots of sodium in them as well.

Thanks for the suggestions and the info on the 'fat free and low fat' stuff. I would have never thought that!

They have also low sodium cookbooks. Those are great. I had to do it while pregnant. They also said mexican and chinense(sp) food have lots of sodium. Actually fast food period is high in sodium.

I try to stay away from sodium simply because it is not good for you. I recommend Mrs. Dash for adding flavor to your foods. I still use frozen veggies. I also use healthy choice frozen dinners for my prepared foods (mostly lunch at work) Healthy Choice has a drastic cut in sodium compared to any other prepared foods that I have ever seen!
