Inductions
posted 29th Jun
So, I was completely surprised when the doctor gave me our induction date at my last appointment...so surprised that I forgot to ask just exactly what would happen.
I know it all depends on whether or not you have dilated at all, and I have not, as of 2 weeks ago (doc has not checked me since).
I was just curious the process of everyone elses inductions...did they use cervidil first? break your water almost immediately? when did they start pitocin, if at all? Things like that, I get induced in less than 35 hours and I am now getting nervous!!!!!!

first...congrats!!
My induction was diff b/c my water had been broken for 10 days prior.
So, since my water was broken and I was dialted to 3cm, they just used pitocin. 7 hours later Darwin was born.

I think it depends somewhat on your Dr's personal "strategy". My neighbors induction involved Cervadil. My Dr. said that he would not be using Cervadil, that he would break my water and then start a pictotin drip (which I really don't want).
I will be induced on my due date if I don't go before. My two previous deliveries went over (3 days on 1st and 10 DAYS for 2nd). I have not had any dialation yet either so I'm not sure if he will induce on the 15th if there is still not dialation....maybe then he will try the Cervadil??

I didn't mind the pitocin at all.

CatLuvr83 :: Thanks..I have just heard some major HORROR stories that involved pictotin....I have had two natural labors and the contractions were horrible..and my Dr says contraction pain is really the same regardless (he's a man, so he doesn't have a clue...but he has seen 100s of women give birth)

Aw,
You're welcome.
I got my epi at 5cm b/c that's when the pain was too much for me...it's wasn't excurtiating, but it was to the point where I tensed up and started a nervous fidget. The epi was delicious...no pain at all after that.
And they let my pitocin continue even after Darwin was born to encourage uteran contractions -- similar to massaging the uterus too.

For me,
They started me on Pitocin since I was at a -2 stage and they couldn't even reach my water to break it. I was only 1/2 cm dilated and 50-80% effaced upon entering the hospital.
They kept me on the pitocin from 9am until 6pm when they decided to stop it because it was getting me NO WHERE. I was maybe 2 cm and still -2 stage at that point. They decided against the cervadil because they thought my body would respond better by starting the pitocin the next day at 6am. I refused a sleeping pill that night.
Thank goodness I refused that pill. At 11pm, I went into labor on my own. Received the epidural at about 330 when I was dilated to 6cm. (My water broke, on its own, when I was in the jacuzzi tub trying NOT to get the epidural) At least I think it did. I never felt it break or saw it break. I just went from barely any pain to TONS of pain and needed pain meds. They checked me and felt her hair..and knew my water had to have broken.
I had her at 737am. They had me on pitocin after the epidural because it slowed my contractions. The only complication I had from the pitocin was that she forgot to turn it off when I was in the pushing stage, and it was making me have contractions every 30seconds and was causing the baby to stress and I had to have oxygen. Once that was taken care of, I was good to go!
I was 100% against an epidural going in. If I had gotten some sleep and my husband had been there, I probablly wouldnt have gotten it. But I had no sleep in 24 hours and my husband was back at home because he didn't think I was going to be in labor that night(we have pets he had to care for and my mom was staying with me). He got there shortly after my epidural though, so he didn't miss the birth!
The induction wasn't bad for me. I will do it all naturally if I ever do it again. My back has hurt badly ever since I got the Epidural.

Reading your story makes me feel better.
Seems like the only inductions stories I ever here are horror stories.

I wouldn't worry. I think the excess stress you put your body through makes it worse. I went in there mentally prepared for everything. I did get a bit upset at one of my doctors because he scared me at saying we were doing it too early and it could last up to three days. (They induced me TWO Days after my due date)
See, I have four doctors in my practice, being guaranteed one will always be on duty at the hospital. So one scheduled it too early, so the other had to make me aware of the possible complications. He just did not have good bedside manner.
I was so glad I kicked into labor on my own before that next morning and had the baby(delivered by him LOL) without having to hear an "I Told You So" from him.
So I was induced earlier than normal and it still went well.
I say to be relaxed. Surround yourself with supportive people, and make the best of such a glorious experience.
I shared the ins and outs of it with my students, and they all enjoyed it. I soaked in everything I could. I even cut her umbilical cord because my husband was too scared to, I watched the birth in a mirror behind the doctor. I requested it all!!
Enjoy it..it's a very special event!

When are you getting induced? They have to schedule it with the hospital so I doubt you are actually getting induced tomorrow unless they told you.
There are rare occasions where they will tell you to come that evening to the hospital after preparing you for all you need to do beforehand.
EAT WELL..I don't care how nervous you are. While you are on pitocin or being induced you get NO solid food. Just broth, popsicles(my hospital had color changing yummy ones)/water/and clear soda.
Bring plenty to do, crossword puzzles or anything to keep you busy. YOu cant walk around and such while on Pitocin. You can just go to the bathroom and back because you have to stay on the monitors.

They told me "next monday"
and I also see the ob/gyn AT the hospital. so yeah idk if that matters lol.

im not sure, normally they have to make sure they have a room ready for you, but that all depends on your hospital.
I would go in there expecting the best tomorrow!! ) Relax and soak the entire experience up. It may seem slow at the time, but in retrospect, it goes by so fast!
