Promotion of Teen Pregnancy?

posted 29th Jun
So my husband and I were discussing this earlier.... Do you think movie like Juno, and this new ABC show call The Secret Life of an American Teenager promote teen pregnancy? In your opinion, do they show that teen pregnancy is Ok, and something cool enough for hollywood to make a movie or show about?

(Please don't take this post wrong. I do not have anything against teen parents, my brother was a teen parent at age 16 and I love my niece unconditionally. This is just to see what other's opinions are!  )

I don't know what my opinion of this is but I do NOT think the movie Juno promotes teen pregnancy. The girl in the movie got pregnant by accident on her very first time. She knew she wasn't ready for a child so she gave it to someone who was more than ready. I don't understand why the media keeps saying Juno is promoting teen pregnancy.

even if they do promote it I still put !00% responsibility on the teen.

But to answer your question, not promoting as much as making it look more glorified.

I don't think its promoting it at all. I think its showing teens out there what could and would happen if they did get pregnat. How hard and difficult it would be. Showing kids that if they decide to have sex the outcome can be pregnancy.

I think the important part about Juno is that she realizes she cannot care for the baby so she sets up adoption. She doesn't back out in the end, and the honesty of seeing her cry really highlights what a life-changing experience it is. I haven't seen ABC's new show, but have seen commercials.

in a way yes and no. I guess it just depends on how a person sees it. I don't think it promotes teen pregnancies , its just showing the struggles young moms hav to go through. But the little bit of comic releif kinda make it seem like its okay to get pregnant at that young of an age.JMO

I dont think it promotes teen pregnancy.

I think it targets that particular group., because lets face it, there is and always will be teens that get pregnant.

Making movies to target that particular audience isnt promoting it in my eyes, but simply showing them it is ok, and its not the end. They can still go to school, if they choose have their babies, or give them up for adoption.

I'm not sure if I believe that they promote teen pregnancy. I haven't seen The Am. Teen show but I have seen Juno. I think that movies/shows like that are good in a way because it shows that even if you do get pregnant at a young age there are ways to get through it and they show the responsible thing to do. Lets young people know that it doesn't mean your life is over.

no. i think it informs them. i havent seen Juno but fdrom wat i hear it shows how the girl gave the baby up for adoption....how is that "glamorizing" anything? as far as this new show goes, it seems like they will being showing the reality of bein pregnant at a young age.....and i think thats beneficial. no one willingly wants to go thru the amount of ridicule and judgement that a teen mother goes thru.

Maybe these movies are just showing how teen pregnancy is growing.
In my opinion, Juno doesn't promote teen pregnancy. She gave her baby up for adoption. The part where she just lays in the hospital bed and cried just broke my heart!
I think movies and shows are trying to show that teen pregnancy does happen. I might have to add more later. I can't get all my thoughts together currently.

AGREED!
Im TIRED of hearing how Juno promotes it..
Ok some other shows may..
But Juno deff does not!!

I think that shows that show the reality of how tough it is and what teens go through help discourage it..
I dno but thats what it seems like the secret life is about..
And the baby borrowers shows how hard it is to take care of a child
I dont think many are promoting it at all
I think they are actually showing that it IS a problem
And that it needs to be "fixed"
And alot of teens watch things like that..
So maybe theyll pick up and watch this and realize "wow its harder than I thought"
