Racism...

What does racism mean?
1 :a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race 2 :racial prejudice or discrimination

Lately I've been listening to alot of talk radio shows and what not, and chatting with people on this so very touchy subject... racism. This week I kept running into this issue, and often wondered where it came from. I was with a group of friends, and out of nowhere someone pulls a friend of mine aside *white just happens to be mixed with white and pueto rican, but she just looks white*, and the guy asked her, "why are you hanging around a bunch of ni****s?" *referring to me and one of her co-workers* She herself was astounded by what the man had said, and she simply replied, "Why are you asking? Is it not my right to be with whom I wish?" Needless to say he just walked away with this nasty look on his face.

Another incident I had faced this week, I was with my little brother who is 2 and a girl I went to school with, a woman misunderstood what I had said on a particular subject, and she basically called me a racist b***h. I simply replied to her while grabbing my little brother's hand," I think you misunderstood my point in a conversation you were never in, but since you have said what you obviously needed to say about it, all i have to say to you is thank you for your words." and we walked away... I just dont know what it was about this week but it seems like certain things people dislike are because of race. I grew up in a home where we personally weren't allow to say the n-word or any other racial slur in the book.

I would like to know peoples opinions on racism: did you grow up around it,how do you deal with it,ect. ect. I mean what makes it okay for people to act and say things like that? Thoughts ladies?

Touchy topic. I come from a town where I was beaten by a group of aboriginal girls and instead of punishing the girls who did it, they locked me in a classroom at lunch times for my protection because if they had of tried to lock the girls who did it away as punishment, the girls would scream racism.
Since that experience I worked very hard to not to be tainted. My family are still very racist because of many instances like this. I've moved to a big city now where I havn't found race an issue at all... Unless you count hating fucking telemarketers calling from a call centre in India who don't speak english.. Grrrrr!

I think this is a very touchy topic too. I myself am not racist against people. I remember discussing this one while I was in school. Being racist actually goes further than just the color of your skin. I think if someone was racists, they should atleast keep their mouth shut. It is uncalled for to say anything rude to someone especially if they haven't even said anything to you. This post made me think about a memory from my childhood. My best friend I had from elementary school up to 5th or 6th grade was black. I had invited her over to my house after school one day (she lived just up the road) and she asked if my parents had friends that were the same color as her. It caught me off guard but I was so young and never had to deal with anything like that. I've always grown up with a variety of races around me. this is longer than I planned to write and its probably not much help at all to you but I'm sorry you had to deal with that this past week.

Who called you a "black ghost"? I know it was meant to be mean and sorry if it bothered you but I just find that so ridiculous that it's funny to me..

In any case, I grew up in the military and it was a great environment to grow up in in regards to racism and thwarting it.. It was a very blended microcosm so now as an adult I'm just NOW running into issues on race - but still, I don't experience much first hand I just hear a lot of stuff.. My poor husband (who is a very light skinned Mexican with a very hispanic name) runs into racist crap all the time and some of the things he tells me blows my mind! Even his own family was discriminant against him because he's so light! It's bizarre to say the least..

But as for me, I'm colorblind and I intend to stay that way..

oh yeah i do hate when telelmarketrs call and they're not from this country and i can't understand a damn word they're saying.. lol but i try and wind up having a conversation with them... i guess thats why i dont have telemarketers calling my house anymore :-p

exactly and thats what i feel like saying half the time for them to kiss my ass but it really doesnt solve anything.. i guess the world is full of color after all.   but yeah, im mixed black,white,hispanic,jamaican, and native american.
