How and when to start disciplining

posted 26th Jun
Tait will be 5 months old on the 29th. And I am in no way wanting to spank him or anything, but he is starting to reach for food on my plate, and it's hot. I dont want him to burn his hand or knock it down on himself so should I just say "no" and pull his hand away? Or is it to early for "no"? How and when did you start to tell your kids no?

Ive started already and my daughter is going to be 4 months on the 3rd. As long as youre not spanking I dont see anything wrong with giving a stern no so they can start understanding it

When the girls did that we just moved their hand away and said "hot" the more we said it the more they got used to it. It takes time but I would just keep telling him no and saying "hot".

lol...Riley turns 8 months Saturday and today I said no in a stern voice and smacked his little hand with one finger when he was eating the paper towels (such a helpful boy). He looked at me with shock and then laughed his ass off.

Kyle slapped tait's hand (not hard, but wnough) when he was in the hospital he was pulling at his IV, and it didnt even phase him. I flipped out, but it didnt bother him at all

You're at the stage where there is a difference between discipline and training. Your baby is to young to be able to reason and understand what he is doing. However, you can start training him now to understand that when you say 'no' it means to stop doing something. I.E. He reaches for your food and you say 'no' and maybe even tap his hand- hard enough to make a point but not hard enough to 'hurt' him. That's training. If he were to get to your food and you spank his leg and tell him he's a bad baby for touching your food- that's discipline. He will hit an age where you will realize he understands what he is doing is wrong and will still do it- then you start with discipline. Until then, all you can do is train him to understand your rules! There's a fine line between training and discipline. You will really know when you cross it, it was really clear with our son.

I started telling my son "no" about that same time. If he kept doing it, I would either thump or give him a small smack on the back of the hand & say "no" again. He knows what it means now....so when he does it anyway, it is willful disobedience & gets in trouble.

My son is in 6 mths old and he pulls my hair and I say ouch, then pull his hair (lightly) and tell him ouch. He doesnt like it when I pull his hair so I am hoping he will learn that ouch means dont do that it hurts lol....so far its not working though lol.
