I understand that you are trying to distinguish between stopping behaviour and adjusting behaviour. However if we are going to use the word discipline and not use the distinguishing words that you have chosen to, then it is necessary to recognize that simply stopping behaviour is the most initial form of discipline. It's not bad, harmful, or in anyway trying to punish the other parent's child, but is still the beginning of discipline. The child will usually recognize that an adult has seen a problem with my behaviour or there would have been no reason for him/her to stop me from doing it.

Getting up out of my chair is also the beginning of going across the room to cook dinner, but sometimes I just need to get up and scratch my ass.
