Why does my stomach get so tight?

posted 26th Jun '08
It only happens before bed or when Im asleep and wake up. My stomach usually feels mostly mushy and soft. But right before bed or waking up to pee, my stomach feels rock hard all over. It hurts and very uncomfortable. I have to take a warm shower or drink cold water and walk around to get her moving to be able to get comfy again. Why is this? Just her positioning or what? Anyone else going through this?

you are farther than me but I've been having that for awhile. I never brought it up to a doctor because its not painful or anything. Just a little uncomfortable. Anyway i assume its braxton hicks?

If it's all over and doesn't just feel like a tiny part of her pressing on you then it's mostly likely braxton hicks. I get them only at night too, usually before bed/shower.

ITs called a contraction   Your uterus tightening to stay healthy and conditioned in preparation for labor. Its very normal. The baby moving can trigger a contraction, as can having to pee or changing positions suddlenly, and it should happen when you have an orgasm as well. They are very normal and healthy and usually happen several times a day as you get closer to your due date. Alot of people refer to them as Braxton Hicks... meaning contractions that dont start labor, just happen once in a while.

Yeah its my whole belly that gets tight. But I didnt think it was BH cause it lasts for like 30 min or longer. The dr explained BH to me as tightening and releasing so I just thought itwas different since it lasts so long.

I always thought it was just her streaching.

You know mine feel the same way even though it's supposed to be releasing or contracting. I went in on Monday to see my doc because Sunday night I had one for 2+ hours. At your next appointment have your doctor check you for "softening" or dilation. Mine have made it so my cervix is soft and starting to prep for labor.

Contractions in general can last anywhere from 15 seconds to over a minute... 30 seconds is pretty average.   Even Braxton Hicks.

I have an appt on Wed so Ill make sure to ask. Last time I went I didnt ask about it cause I thought it was just her pressing against my stomach and I thought BH hurt... well it does hurt because its making my stomach VERY uncomfortably tight but I thought it would have sharp pains associated with it for some reason.

I had BH daily with my daughter from like 18 weeks on... and not one of them was painful until I went into labor at 40 weeks! BH shouldnt hurt.... if they do you might want to get them checked out. They can be awfully tight though, so uncomfortable is normal, but not sharp pain.

Yeah Sharon 30 seconds is normal but mine have been for 20-30 MINUTES at a time and max 2+. Not 2 hours of contractions but 2 hours of straight rock hard full belly. We didn't think mine were contractions/BH based on the time they were lasting until we checked my cervix.
