umbilical granuloma

posted 26th Jun
So I am just curious, did anyone elses kids have this when their umbilical cord fell off? My daughters Pedi didn't diagnose it until she was nearly 2 months old... which my current pedi thinks was neglegent (sp?) At 2 months he applied the silver nitrate, which i guess is supposed to cure it. Well it hasn't for my daughter. We go in tomorrow, bc she had yet another flare up with it.. and I am kind of wondering if maybe it isn't more then umbilical granuloma.. maybe something else is wrong with her. I kind find any info on it on google, other than it only occurs in 1 out of 500 babies, and they don't know of anything that can prevent it it, or what causes it... and of course that you apply silver nitrate to cure it..
So this is what is going on, about once a month or so my daughter gets these flare ups with her navel, it gets really red inside and it starts to ooze like a yellowish-clear substance, and it will get crusty all over inside and out.. I try to take care of it and swab it with alcohol to get it to dry up... but she is 18 months now, this should be done... that and I feel so bad bc she screams bloody murder when I touch her belly button when it is like that...So I finally called the Dr. She is, like I said scheduled for tomorrow, but I am worried that it will be dried up by then and the pedi won't see what I am talking about... I have been trying to not do anything to it so that way maybe the pedi will see it.... (I mean like no swabbing with alcohol)
But I guess my question for you ladies is, do/have any of your kids have/had this, and if so then what did your Dr. have to do to treat it? Or do you think that it sounds like something more than granuloma?thank you in advance!!

I don't have any experience with that, but you should take a picture of her bellybutton in case it does dry up before the appointment because it might help the doctor out to see it. Good luck and I hope they get things figured out!

no no no, not neglect on my end.. this pedi has been our pedi since my first was born... well for the most part.. we moved out of state for a while, so my little one saw a different pedi... and the current pedi was saying the the last pedi was neglegant to NOT notice it until 2 months, bc apparently he should have noticed it soon after the umbilical cord fell off. sorry if I didn't explain that well enough!!!

what is an umbilcal hernia? is it like a reg. hernia? Bc Apparently Aurora has one of those too... it is right above her belly button, just a little lump and they told me it was too little to worry about, but that they would watch it as she got older, is that different then what your daughter has?

The hole that allowed the umbilical cord to go through never closed up. She still has it and her intestines poke out. It doesnt look as bad now that she is bigger. It hasnt gotten any smaller but it looks smaller since she has grown. Shes almost 2 and if it hasnt closed by her 4th bday they want to do surgery to close it. Heres a pic of it:

aww, poor baby. Why do they wait so long to do something about it? it just seems that something like that would warrant surgery earlier than 4 years!! I guess as moms we think differently huh.

thank you, adn I hope she gets better soon too! But yeah, if my Dr. ever accused me of neglect on my kids, I don't think I would ever go back... bc like you said I have one perfectly healthy one... ya know it just wouldn't make sense.

99% close up before the age of 4 so if it hasnt by then they will do the surgery. They dont want to do surgery if there is no real need. I really would rather her get the surgery as a baby, then play the wait and see game, especially since its her intestines that poke out...

yeah, I think I would want the same thing surgery wise, I would be worried about something like intestines sticking out for sure...

Just thought I would update, we took Aurora to the Dr. today and she said everything is fine, and there is nothing she can do for it. I asked her why it oozed, and she told me that Aurora is supposed to have an outie belly button, it just hasn't pushed all the way out, so it is just getting like water and stuff caught in the folds and then it gets kind of infected and tried to clean itself out. So apparently now I just have to make sure to use a cotton swab in it everyday to make sure its clean.
