Aww Mama I'm sorry it ruined your day. But just think of it like this, after he learns that stuff he'll be able to communicate with everyone including you much better than he does already!

Mackenzie was diagnosed with H1N1 today. They also said that my sinus infection is more than likely H1N1 not a sinus infection, same goes for my husband. I'm exhausted. I posted this in another thread read if you're interested.

So, apparently H1N1 is not as bad as everyone thinks it is. I came to this conclusion as I was taking my daughter home from Hasbro Children's Hospital with a 103.4 temp and a prescription for Tamiflu. It boggled my mind that I had spent approximately 12 Hours in hospitals and yet here I was bringing home a very sick seven month old girl.

Our day started at 6am when my little girl woke up screaming which is extremely unusual for her. I ran into her room to see what was wrong and as I picked her up I noticed she was extremely hot to the touch. I went and took her temperature and it came out to 102.4, I decided to give tylenol and re-temp in a half an hour. That half an hour came and went and as I retook her temperature the thermometer did not stop where I was hoping. The numbers kept rolling, all the way to 102.8. I panicked, I called the emergency pediatrician line, they said to give her a warm bath for 20 minutes, more tylenol and re-temp afterward. I did as I was told and to my complete horror the numbers on the thermometer spun to 103.6. My husband and I packed the baby up and headed to South County hospital. Now, this is where the fun begins. Luckily, when we got there it was completely empty in the waiting area so we only had to wait about 5 minutes to be called in. The staff were very nice, the doctor was too. They ran their tests and concluded the most horrifying thing a mother's ears can hear, my baby had H1N1. My mind swam, and a bunch of words and sentences were thrown at me. Some information about Tamiflu and how it can cause seizures in children under 2, they talked to my daughter's pediatrician and she wanted us to go to Hasbro Children's Hospital where it was possible that my daughter would be admitted for the night because they could not lower her fever at South County Hospital.

We were given the option of driving our daughter ourselves so we took that option and decided to stop home for some essentials (bottles and money) and took off toward Providence. When we got there we were not sure where to park, where to stand, whom to speak with, what was supposed to be done and most importantly where we were supposed to be. We had to ask another patient that was nice enough to tell us we had to wait right where we were standing. My husband and I looked around and saw a sea of masked faces and were amazed that so many children were there that day to be treated for the H1N1 Flu. We registered and had to correct our registration, we put on masks, then our daughter was weighed and her temperature was taken, she still had a high fever. We were sent to go sit down and we waded through the people to find some seats. Two hours passed and my husband went to ask if our daughter could possibly have some more tylenol to which they said she had to be re-temped and I was put into a chair to wait with my feverish baby. When someone finally called us in they told me to put my daughter on the scale which she had already been on and started doing all the things they had already done. I did not object, for I just wanted some tylenol for my baby and would have done those same drills five times for it.

As we sat and waited longer we began to grow antsy wondering why it obviously wasn't important that a baby had a very high fever and a confirmed case of H1N1. We sat in that waiting room for around five hours before being called into a room. We were asked some questions and were surprised that it was not written somewhere on the baby's chart that she had H1N1 because the nurse almost jumped out of her skin putting on her mask and going to find a sign like we were some quarantined lepers. When the doctor came in we were shocked when she came right out and said "I am not quite sure why you are here" meaning she was not sure why South County Hospital had sent us. I said it was because the baby's temperature was not lowering with tylenol and motrin and that tamiflu might have to be used, if so the pediatrician wanted her to be admitted for observation because there is a history of seizures on both sides of the family. She looked at me and tried not to laugh and told me that Tamiflu had no such side effects and that she "had been giving it out like water for the last two weeks" which made me a tad bit angry. She told us she was going to call the pediatrician and disappeared for 45 minutes.

While we waited for the doctor's return we asked one of the male nurses for some tylenol. He came in with the thermometer that takes your temperature on your forehead, which had already been proven not to work on the baby. He got excited that it said 99.8 and skipped out of the room to go tell the doctor. He returned, said something that I didn't care to listen to because he didn't have medicine for my baby and I watched Spongebob on TV while I waited for the doctor. When she finally decided that she had a good enough excuse from the pediatrician she came in and informed us that it was the other Hospital's decision to send us and they were blaming the pediatrician. Basically, I had just sat in a hospital for six hours for no apparent reason at all. I got our papers, one with the prescription for Tamiflu and left. My little girl was still sick, still had a high fever, but we were going home. So if a 7 month old baby with a confirmed case of H1N1 and a 103.6 fever is not enough to throw a red flag up, I just don't see what the fuss is about.

OMG!! I hope you all get better soon! I'm so worried about Izzy catching H1N1. The docs basically told me they don't know if she would survive it because of her diagnosis. I'm sorry you had to drive to another hospital and sit in the waiting room just to be sent back home! I hate ER waiting rooms. Whenever we go, we try to sit away from everyone because we are usually there for seizures, and dont want Izzy to get more seriously sick from someone else. I'm happy that you guys are home now, at least Mackenzie can start getting well in the comfort of her own home!

It's okay to be a little down, it's only natural as a mother to get worried. But don't give up! Now you can try new things to help him and I'm sure he'll pick it up fast!
