re: The irony of Sodom

posted 27th Jun '08
Hehe, Abraham makes me laugh in that passage.

Sodomy and homosexuality are used interchangeable sometimes because the people of Sodom were known for being homosexual. Some translations even say in Genesis 19:5 "bring them out so that we may have sex with them." If the men of Sodom only wanted to make their acquaintance as your translation suggests Lot wouldn't need to "protect" the angels under his roof.

The passage that you referenced in Ezekiel definitely highlights the social injustice of Sodom but it also says "abomination" some translations say "desecration", I believe Ezekiel is talking about sexual perversion or impurity. The social injustice and sexual sin were both terrible but when the angels came to Sodom they were stalked in order to be raped, they saw nothing of the social injustice in that instance so that probably adds to why homosexuality is the great sin of Sodom. It should be more the whole rape thing in my opinion.

Yes, I completely agree that it is ironic that the same people judging and condemning homosexuals are very guilty of social injustice. I think because it's a sexual "sin" (parenthesized becauseif it is a sin or not is debatable) they somehow feel personally threatened. They are so busy worrying about someone else's speck that they fail to see their own log.

Exactly, and thats why he offered his 2 daughters to the townsmen in place of the Angels,so they may have a "poke" at them instead per se.

Yes, the translations say that.

What did it say in the original language? That's what is important.

I don't understand why anyone is having a problem comprehending this.

49Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
50And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

I apologize in advance because I'm about to get really condescending here, but frankly, that I need to do this warrants it, in my not so humble opinion:

GOD SAYS: BEHOLD, THIS WAS THE INIQUITY (or as the dictionary translates, SIN) OF THY SISTER SODOM: PRIDE, FULLNESS OF BREAD, ABUNDANCE OF IDLENESS AND NEITHER DID SHE STRENGTHEN THE HAND OF THE POOR AND NEEDY.

GOD SAYS STRAIGHT OUT THAT THE SIN OF SODOM IS BEING UNCHARITABLE TO THE POOR AND NEEDY. STRAIGHT OUT. FROM GOD. HOW IS THIS CONFUSING TO ANYONE? THE SIN WAS NOT HOMOSEXUALITY, IT WAS MISTREATING THE POOR.

He mentions they were haughty, and they committed some unnamed abomination. Even if we consider that the abomination God referenced WAS homosexuality, it's tacked on as an afterthought, the CRIME/SIN is mistreating the poor and needy, God says so CLEARLY.

Note: The angels were sent because GOD HAD ALREADY DECIDED TO DESTROY SODOM!!!!!!!!1111111, SODOM WAS NOT DESTROYED BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WANTED TO HAVE SEX WITH THE ANGELS.

Now, if this is still not clear, I have to assume that you, the reader, are an absolute idiot, and I cannot further help you. If something that is said flat out in the Bible, in words, by God, is not enough to convince you, then you clearly aren't much of a Christian, saying that what God says isn't true and all...

Also, please note that the above is a knee jerk reaction, and not intended to any specific persons, but to any and all persons who insist that, despite me showing what is written in black and white in the Bible, that clearly Sodom was destroyed because some guys wanted to fuck some angels...

It's rare for me to lose my cool, but damn.

I don't have a Biblical Lexicon, I have to trust what has been translated.

I'm sorry if my post infuriated you. I was actually not disagreeing with you, I was pointing out why I thought the great crime of Sodom is known as homosexuality. There are a lot of things in the Bible that have been twisted by cultures to suit their own agenda, and this seems to be one of those.

I can't say so much your post infuriated me, as it was the match to the powder keg that already existed, lol.

I did see where you agreed with me, and I assure you that vitriol wasn't aimed entirely at you. Like I said, you just kind of lit the match on my already existing powder keg, lol.

And if I may be like Abraham and be so bold as to approach you again, hehe
I also agree with you on the first part of why Sodom was destroyed. I guess I didn't make that clear, I was just stating why I thought it was known as the great crime of Sodom.

Indeed, I do realize that.

Please accept my apologies if you felt I was going off on you. I do see how it seems that way. Your remarks DID set me off, but not specifically at you, because I did see what you were saying in your post.

But, I have low tolerance where this specific issue is concerned, and as I said, your post set me off, even while I realize that you were not yourself contradicting me.

New Testament, in Jude 1:7...

"Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire."

The term "going after strange flesh" is explained to us in Proverbs 7:5 and Romans 1:26-27...

"That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words."
"For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."

Here's something I could never understand when it came to the bible. Why are the explanations for something in a completely separate chapter and quite often in a completely different context? It happens all the time when bible-toting evangelicals attempt to save me... they'll explain one story with another, and usually go through 4 or 5 references before the issue is entirely dealt with. Why didn't God make these important issues of sin and our immortal soul more clear, and the bible easier to follow?

I dont understand half of it either. My husband is a studier of theology, so i get my information from him when i dont understand. You have to remember though, in those times, they spoke very differently then we do now days. Also the bible was translated several times before it was written in what we know today as the King James Bible. So you may lose or gain a word here and there during these translations.
