BABY HASN'T POOPED IN 3 DAYS....

posted 25th Jun '08
Is this normal? He is breastfed and I have started him on oatmeal as of a couple weeks ago. He is still having tons of peepee diapers, doesn't show any signs of being sick or in any sort of discomfort. I gace him some prune/apple juice (as they didn't have any plain baby prune juice) and even a couple spoonfulls of prune baby food... nothing happened!! I heard from these other parents (of a 2 year old and 7 month old) that after 3 days if he hasn't gone I can give him a suppository, is this true or should I just wait it out? help!

My 3 week old is both breastmilk and formula fed, and has trouble with constipation. My doctor said that after 2 days if she hasn't pooped, I need do give her a glycerin suppository. The suppositories we bought are "Pedia-Lax". We cut them in half because theyre meant for 2-6 year olds, but those were the only pediatric suppositories.

Call his dr, before you start him on suppositories, but it can be common for babies when being introduced to solids. My son had the same problem, but definately check with his dr. so you make sure you get the correct ones, and if he really needs it.

If he eats the baby prunes just keep at it. My son had some troubles when he first went on cereal. I needed to give him prunes for a couple of days before the gates opened !!! If you are really concearned make an appt with your pediatrician. Talk to your pharmasist about the suppository or other possible solutions.... Good Luck!

I've been told by quite a few different nurses, that it is quite normal for them to go a bit more then a week without having a bowel movement.... Corbin had a real issue with this when he was born, he pretty much went once a week... lol. (saves on diapers!!) Making sure he has lots of wet diapers is good...   And it's not too bad if he isn't going regularily, but if it's coming out erally hard, then he is probably constipated.... Supositories won't help young babies 'learn' how to push it out for themselves all that much, but I dont think it will hurt them that much either..
And yeah I agree with the other posts, a change in his diet is def., going to make a change... For a while Corbin was breastfed and formula fed, and I think that's why he was so irregular. Poor guy couldnt get use to anything
Give him tummy massages! Rub his tummy, clockwise, and then down his left leg. And do bicycle movements with his legs...Give him a warm bath..... and if he's pushing, you could help him out a bit by pushing his knees towards his belly a bit...

After almost a week of no pooping, I finally gave Aerro the prune/apple juice. He got constipated from nany bananas. Today he POOPED!! WOOHOO!
Poor baby. Looked like it was such a chore. Now he's sleeping. I'd do the juice a few days. I watered mine down. 2 oz=2 oz water. More gentle on the belly that way. Good luck!!

I am gonna use that advice you posted--Lilly gets so uncomfortable when she goes 24-48 hours without pooping! Poor girl!

I also helped my son to push by gently pushing his knees into his tummy. This may be TMI, but I would also actually pull some of the poop out once he pushed it out a bit. I would grab a diaper wipe and help him out. Sounds gross, but I would rather that then see my baby bean stuggle and be in so much pain !

Well, Brendan used to be very regular! I mean as soon as he'd wake up around 8 I'd put him in his bouncer (or his toilet as I liked to call it, lol) he'd go, pretty much right away! but I think you guys are right about the change in the diet thing, thats gotta be it! I've tried the tummy massages, and his warm baths, well, that hasn't helped either! I've also heard it's normal for them not to go for a week... hell, I'D be miserable if I hadn't gone in a WEEK! yikes! thanks for your input!

Thank you! I guess I will keep trying it! I mean as long as he doesn't seem to be in any pain I guess I shouldn't worry!

I just went through the same thing today. Julien has always been super regular. Well today he hadn't gone all day and he was getting crankier and crankier (poor thing). I tried almost everything and was starting to think that I might have to call the doctor tomorrow but luckily he went (and I had to give him another bath  ). Maybe there's something in the air??? lol

I hope your little guy is feeling better now!

Wow, that must be awful for you (I love my sleep so much that I do ANYTHING I can to ensure Julien will sleep all night lol). Did you end up going to a doctor?

Someone mentioned on this thread about rubbing babys tummy clockwise, and it totally worked for my daughter! She gets constipated CONSTANTLY, so I rubbed her tummy for awhile, and it worked!

Maybe you should try it!
