Chances of preterm labor happening again

posted 25th Jun
My duaghter was born 14 weeks early and it has been over 5 months since she came home and she is doing beautifully. I'm sure this question has been asked before but I was wondering for the women who have had a micro preemie birth, if they ever had to experience that again. Julia ws born early and although many tests were performed on both of us we were both healthy. My doctor has informed me that there were no signs that I was having preterm labor and still has no idea why it happened. Please let me know your experiences because I am horribly terrified about having another baby fearing this may happen again, but at the same time I want to be able to give Julia brothers and sisters.

Once you've had a preterm delivery, you're twice as likely to deliver early again. There are things that your provider will do when you get pregnant again. You will be monitered much more closely and probably be given steroid shots to mature your babies lungs when the time comes.

If your premature baby was not caused by a known factor, it will be much harder to determine whether subsequent children will be early as well. Sometimes there's a 'fluke' and your body's clock just signals labor earlier than it should. Sometimes your body is set that way. There's no way to know for sure. I highly recommend meeting with a perinatologist before conceiving. They will provide you with a consultation, assess your risk factors and set up a game plan for your pregnancy. You will probably need a referal from your OB.

*this is an answer I gave to another mom asking the same question. I copied and pasted it because it applies to you as well =)
