So she was full term but had a ton of issues and is now only 10 pounds 4 months later? Did they ever figure out what the problem was? Is she still in the hopital? Why isn't she gaining weight well? Sorry for all the questions

She was born on Feb.19, but she was due March 5th. The aren't sure what happened..but if Alby (her dad) didn't just randomly check her at that exact moment and do baby CPR..she wouldn't have made it. No, she isn't in the hospital anymore, and she is gaining weight. She started out at 5lbs, then went down to 3 something, and now is almost 10lbs.

Well, I meant full term as in 37 weeks. Which is what she was, right? I guess I just don't understand what the issue was? I'm curious as to why she's had so many issues. Dropping to 3 pounds is pretty drastic and only weighing 10 pounds now is pretty small too. Poor girl though. It sounds like her and her family have been through so much. I'm glad she's on the up and up now!

Leila Julianna came into this world to bless our lives on Feb 19th, 2008, at 5 lbs 8 oz & 18 in. Her name was chosen with great thought- Leila is Persian for "dark-haired beauty" & means "the flower" in Hawaiian. Daddy picked the middle name so he could nickname her "daddy's little jewel."

After our 3 day hospital stay, we came home with a happy, healthy, beautiful baby girl. On our first night home, we awoke around 1am to find our precious Leila unresponsive & unconscious. Alby, who will forever be Leila's special HERO, did CPR until the paramedics arrived. She was in cardiac arrest & continuously rescusitated while rushed to St. Francis. Once the ER staff were able to keep her breathing & somewhat stable, we were taken by a special medical transport team to St. Mary's where they're able to better care for her in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit).

In our first few days here, the doctors put Leila into a medically-induced coma & used a "cooling treatment" for 24 hours to try to avoid additional damage to the brain due to the lack of oxygen. Since we've been here, Leila's gotten a very poor prognosis. She's currently on life support with a ventilator & excessive medication to control her blood pressure, which she can't maintain on her own right now.

After 5 separate EEG's to her brain each day, we were told there was just too much loss of oxygen to her brain & the EEG results all showed extremely minimal to no brain stem function. She was also not showing any signs of brain recovery during her exams. Although she did respond to light & pain initially, her eyes were fixed & dialated yesterday & her exams & EEG showed signs of brain swelling, which can extend the damage to the brain or cause seizures or strokes.

Today Leila was very stable, so an entourage of staff was able to take her to have a CT scan. The results were even more bad news, that there were abnormal findings in her cortex (the upper level of the brain) which signify a considerable amount of brain injury. They did see that there was no evidence of seizures or strokes & the brain swelling was gone.

Yesterday, after being given her grim prognosis, we were asked to make some very difficult decisions about her ongoing care. We decided to give ourselves some time to digest everything & spend some more time with our little angel.

Later this afternoon, a sixth EEG was performed. Due to what appears to be an obvious miracle, there's now cortical brain activity showing on Leila's EEG results. We're not sure exactly what this means for Leila's outcome or future. It seems to mean that if she can maintain her life without support, she has the chance to possibly recover enough brain function to lead a quality life. These results are nothing definitive yet & only a sign of a glimmer of hope that Alby & I DESPERATELY needed right now to ease our spirits & allow us to breathe a deep breath.

Leila is now opening her eyes, appears to be responsive to certain touch, & responds to light & pain (but she is not IN any pain right now). At this point, we are trying to ween her off of the ventilator (which is very possible because her lungs, respiratory system & heart are very healthy) & also ween her from the blood pressure medications.

If she becomes stable enough at some point, we will be able to get an MRI (which she can't have now because metal is not allowed in the testing unit & she's not stable enough to remove her machine support).

For now, the progress she's made in the past 24 hours is NOT indicative of the doctors' prognosis. Instead, she appears to be surprising them by the hour with one unexplainable miracle after another. We're so hopeful that after FIVE "flat" EEG's that showed practically no brain activity, we have a SIXTH one that suggests otherwise.

Your thoughts & prayers are really helping & WORKING! Thanks for ALL the help & support! Please don't stop praying for our newest little miracle, Leila Julianna.

What a wonderful, horrible, heart warming story. I didn't realize she had gone home with a clean bill of health and THEN all this happened. What a difficult thing to cope with. So maybe it was 'SIDS' that was noticed in time to reverse, so to speak? Well anyways, it's wonderful to know she was given another chance and is doing better now.
