James born at 34 weeks, 4 days

posted 23rd Jun
I haven't been here for awhile, but I thought I'd stop in. I had James on Friday, June 20th @ 34 weeks, 4 days. He weighed 6 lbs, 1 oz which is actually a very good weight. I had a positive fetalfibronactin and they did the 2 steroid shots for his lung development. I went into the doctor Friday because I hadn't felt movement in over 24 hours and they did a nonstress which he failed and an ultrasound so they shipped me to a hospital over an hour away better equipted to handle preemies. When I got here they did another nonstress and ultrasound and he wasn't moving still and his oxygen levels were low so they did an emergency csection and he was born at 5:45 pm. He's off oxygen, but he's still on an IV and feeding both by breast and through a tube. They're not sure when he can come home because he's not digesting his food like he should be. He's doing well, but it's hard, and then adding an unexpecting csection to the mix doesnt help. I'll be able to board at the hospital til he comes home cuz I live about 1 1/2 hours away and don't drive, but hubby's leaving tomorrow to go back to work so that will be harder yet. I just want to come home WITH him. Anyways, that's my story...any help would be appreciated! Thanks guys!

Just stay relaxed, and be there for your son! (He's also a big boy for being that early!) He'll be fine, I'm sure of it. Enjoy your last moments of peace & quiet while you can.

Off topic: where are you from in WI? And what hospital did they send him to?

Ah, wow. Yeah, I was wondering if they had sent you to Children's or what, haha. Did you guys have a lot of flooding up there with the rain?

Congratulations on the birth of your little boy! The risiduals are normal and should fade within a day, or two. If that is his only problem, you have a LOT to be grateful for! I know how stressful it is to have a sick baby though, and I'm sorry you're having to experience it. And a c-section to top it off! How are you doing with it? My first section was horrible. Hopefully you're faring well! Keep us posted on James' progress, and yours too! We'd love to hear that you both went home together =)

I'm sore from the c-section and I never even considered having one, it just wasn't something I even thought about with 2 previous vaginal births, so that's hard too. I'm going to see him in 10 minutes and I'll see how he faired through the night and then I'll come post his progress. Thanks God for wireless in the hospital cuz my hubbys leaving til Friday in about 2 hours as well   and being so far from home...I won't have visitors. Thanks everyone!!!

Congratulations on your new baby boy! I am sorry you have to go thru that. It is very hard having a baby in the hospital. I will say a little prayer for little James and your family. Keep strong and keep us updated.

Well, James is on Zantac now to help with the reflux. They also put him on a diff monitor cuz he's having apnea alarms and they want to see if it's actual apnea or if it's the reflux that's causing it. Other than that during his last feeding he actually fed 6 CC's from the breast which he hasn't been doing so they only had to tube feed him 1/2 a feeding! It's be a couple weeks til he can come home and it's lonely cuz my hubby left now so it's just me, but I was approved to stay here at the hosptital for free til he's realeased so thats a comfort. I'll keep ya posted! Amy

Yay for breastfeeding! I felt so proud the first time my baby breastfed. I'm sorry you're having to go it alone, it's really great that you're able to stay at the hospital free of charge though. You'll both be home soon enough!

Thanks! I wish I could sleep, but with my hubby gone I'm having a rough night, UGH...I'll probably go down to the NICU soon to visit James, that helps always!

Congrats on your son   What a big boy! i know its tough doing it alone, my hubby was gone and got home to me over 2 months after i had the twins. In a way it gives you more time and space to gather yourself and work to a schedule you can cope with. I was also travelling 45 miles (about 80km?) each way on public transport so that was hard too, so at least you get to stay in the hospital. Hopefully it will be that bit easier on you if you get to stay there with him, at least you dont need to worry about rushing in! Residuals are common at the start, so hopefully he will be feeding well within a couple of days. Best wishes, im sure you will both be home in no time!
