Coming home outfit
posted 23rd Jun
I've been told that the coming home outfit would have to include a sleeper, cap, socks, and mittens because newborns can't regulate their body temperature very well. Now my due date is September 6 and it's hot as heck here in Southern California. Is all that necessary? I'm told newborns have to be covered from head to toe, is that true? I want to prepare a pretty coordinating outfit for her, and I already bought a few items, but just want to make sure I have everything I need. Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing too because it's like 100 degrees here everyday! I was thinking like a onesie and some socks & mittens and a hat. But I will ask my doc when I see her on the 30th!

My baby had troubles regulating his own temp so he had a long sleeve onesies under a short sleeved one, hat, socks, pants with feet on them, socks and blankets. And he was born at the end of May and it was hot. He had to be dressed up like that for almost a week. I just kept taking his temp and once it was back to normal, I took off some layers. I would definitely make sure you have a hat though.

My hubby and I got Syd a sleeveless onesie outfit and booties to match. I am going to get her a blanket to match also incase it's not really hot that day, but I think as long as you have a little blanket to cover them with (just incase), you should be fine. It's pretty warm here too in Sept, so I'm not going to bother with all of that.

My kids have all been born in Summer so I've always brought them home in a onesie, socks and a little hat.

I would take a summer outfit and a outfit more for cooler weather. My nephew was a Aug baby and left wearing a cute oneise and lite pants that was it and he was fine. I have a dec baby and took her home in a sleeper with a warm blanket over her. At most your baby will need a onsie/shirt and lite pants depending on how warm it is if it is cooler then a pair of socks and a lite blanket. But bring one of each with you and decide what he needs by the weather.

That is a good idea! Hmmmm...now I need to come up with "option #2"

So is the cap necessary if she's gonna be wrapped up in a blanket like a burrito anyway? And can she wear short pantsand short sleeves instead as long as she has socks?

I always heard the cap was important because they lose heat through the head the most. But I guess I don't know if it is hot outside.

I had a super cute dress with some booties and a headband picked out. but also brought a footed sleeper.
She looked like a baby ape though in her dress and we were rushed out of the hospital so I just put her in her PJs I brought. It was nothing special so oh well.

They can not be wraped in a blanket in the car seat. It can go on them after they are harnessed in but not before. They lose most heat from their heads. I just used the one she got from the hospital.

*Cough* Bullshit *Cough* Yes babies don't regulating their body temp too well, but they can over heat just as easy if not more so than get too cold. I was born in Oct in a Sub-arctic Mountain town, with the world's coldest ocean current running beside us helping with cold weather. There was snow, and it was one of the coldest falls in the area. like -10 to -15 C at the time. I was brought home in a pair of tights and a little dress, ok so there was also a blanket involved, but still. My little guy was brought home in Sept, in a different place and climate, it was also (for me) warm 5 to 10C and he came home in a plain old pair of pants and a onesie, oh and a hat, and a pair of socks.

Your baby needs one more (light) layer than you do. So, for example, if you are OK in a sundress and sandals, maybe a onesie and socks for the baby. But it's always a good idea to have a blanket for the baby.

its because they're use to your body temp and when they come out its all crazy and air conditioned. my g-ma is really old school and has them smothered in like a thousand blankets. the mittens are good cuz they scratch their face. my sisters last baby scratched the hell out of his face and she forgot to bring mittens and i had to go buy her some. socks are good cuz it keeps their feet warm... if their feet arent warm nothings really warm. but it's kinda up to you. you dont need a million blankets though, i live in florida and it feels like i'm shoved in an oven down here
